Light and airy, Sadie has such a delightful drape to it that you’ll be able to wear it in many different styles without feeling it’s too bulky.
Sadie is a triangular-shaped one-skein shawl that is worked along the bias. I am making an earnest effort to knit through my overwhelming stash of variegated yarn, acquired years before I ever began my designing life, unable to be paired up with another colorway easily, but too pretty to just let sit there.
Worked flat, Sadie contains written directions, charts, and is broken down into comprehensive sections. The pattern includes detailed instructions for the techniques used and a handy-dandy progress tracker to help you keep track of your row and stitch counts.
Sadie Shawl by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
Sadie is a triangular-shaped, one-skein shawl designed by rhyFlower Knits. This knitting pattern creates a light and airy accessory with an excellent drape, making it versatile enough to wear in multiple styling options without adding bulk. The shawl is worked flat along the bias, allowing for an elegant finished garment that showcases variegated yarn beautifully.
Techniques Used
Sadie is worked flat using bias construction, a technique that creates diagonal lines across the fabric and contributes to the shawl's exceptional drape. This method is ideal for showcasing the color variations in variegated yarns, as the bias direction creates visual interest throughout the piece. The pattern is presented in multiple formats to suit different knitter preferences and experience levels.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used in Sadie is garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique created by knitting every row. Garter stitch provides a reversible, textured fabric with excellent elasticity and drape, making it an ideal choice for shawl construction. The gauge for this pattern is 16 stitches by 25 rows in garter stitch over 4 inches (10 centimeters).
Pattern Format and Instructions
Sadie is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern that includes written directions alongside charted instructions. This dual-format approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters who prefer reading written instructions as well as those who work from charts. The pattern is broken down into comprehensive sections for ease of following.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This one-skein shawl requires 355 yards (324 meters) of fingering weight yarn, classified as 4-ply weight. The designer suggests Ancient Arts Yarns Socknado, a blend of 80% Merino and 20% Nylon, which provides durability and elasticity ideal for shawl wear. The suggested colorway is Water Lily. Knitters will need US7 (4.5 millimeter) circular needles measuring 40 inches (102 centimeters), or the size required to obtain proper gauge. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and optional progress keepers or locking stitch markers to track progress through the pattern.
Skill Level
Sadie is rated as an intermediate-difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shawl construction and bias techniques.
