Product Description
This pattern was designed with toddlers in mind. They usually need a larger bib to cover their fronts. Size is approximately 10 ½” long (6 ¼ neck to bottom) not including the ties and 10” wide. I used 2 colours for a bit of contrast.
One ball of cotton is enough to make the bib. I used a circular needle to work this. It will be necessary for knitting the ruffle and neck but you could use straight needles for the body if you wish. Everything is knitted in one piece so there is no sewing.
If you would like a smaller version knit this pattern up with double knit cotton (this one is classed as Aran) and a smaller needle 2.75 or whatever gives you the texture you want.
The neckline and ties are made using an I-cord and I-cord bind off, which is fully explained.
Ruffles Baby Bib by Eclectic Yarncrafts
Project Overview
The Ruffles Baby Bib is a beginner-friendly knitting project designed to create a practical and charming accessory for babies. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Eclectic Yarncrafts provides complete instructions for constructing a bib featuring decorative ruffled edges and adjustable ties.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a baby bib measuring approximately 10½ inches long from neck to bottom and 10 inches wide, not including the ties. The finished bib features a structured body with decorative ruffled detailing and I-cord ties for secure fastening around a baby's neck.
Techniques Used
The Ruffles Baby Bib employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners:
- I-cord Construction: The ties are created using the I-cord technique, which involves casting on 3 stitches and repeatedly knitting these stitches before moving them back to the left needle. This creates a small, tubular cord that continues for the desired length.
- Increases and Decreases: The pattern uses M1P (make one purlwise) and M1K (make one knitwise) increases, along with P2tog and K2tog decreases, to shape the bib body and create the ruffled effect.
- Short Row Shaping: Sections of the pattern are worked using short rows (turning before reaching the end of the row) to create dimensional shaping on the sides of the bib.
- Stitch Holder Technique: The pattern uses a stitch holder to temporarily hold stitches while working other sections, allowing for symmetrical construction of the bib sides.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates basic knitting stitches appropriate for a beginner project:
- Knit stitch (K)
- Purl stitch (P)
- Slip stitch (S1)
- Make one knitwise (M1K)
- Make one purlwise (M1P)
- Knit two together (K2tog)
- Purl two together (P2tog)
- Knit through back loop (K2tbl)

The Ruffles Baby Bib requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 100g of Garngrossisten Sunny Cotton in a DK or Aran weight
- Needles: 3.25mm circular needle for working the main body and edges

Yarn Weight and Gauge
