Product Description
Ruffled socks are a variation of my simple ribbed socks pattern, a basic sock knitting pattern, with a cast on and heel table for all sizes from baby to adult, accompanied by industry standard sizing. Ruffles are knit on at the end, after finishing the sock.
These socks are knitted cuff-down. There is also a description for all three types of heels: afterthought, short row and flap heel. Links to educational videos are provided in the pattern.
Basically, this is a sock pattern that is a compilation of everything I’d learned while learning how to knit socks cuff-down and an invaluable resource for a sock knitter of any level and a hand knit sock designer. Enjoy!
Ruffled Socks Simple Sock Pattern by Dana Kikic Nemmert
What Is Being Made
The Ruffled Socks Simple Sock Pattern is a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create decorative ruffled socks in multiple sizes, including baby, child, youth, and standard adult sizing. This beginner-friendly pattern combines functional sock construction with a distinctive ruffled design element, making it suitable for knitters new to sock knitting who want to add visual interest to their projects.
Craft and Technique Overview
This pattern is designed for knitting and is specifically categorized as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to knitters who are just starting to explore sock construction. The pattern utilizes fundamental sock knitting techniques combined with simple stitch manipulations to create the ruffled effect. The design emphasizes straightforward construction methods while incorporating decorative elements that elevate the finished garment beyond basic sock patterns.
Stitches and Abbreviations Used
The pattern employs a range of standard knitting stitches and techniques documented through the following abbreviations:
- K - knit stitch
- P - purl stitch
- yo - yarn over (used to create decorative openings and texture)
- ssk - slip slip knit (a left-leaning decrease)
- k2tog - knit two together (a right-leaning decrease)
- sl - slip stitch
- CO - cast on
- BO - bind off
- sts - stitches
- rd/rds - round or rounds (indicating in-the-round construction)
- m - marker (for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings)
- BOR - beginning of the round
Materials and Gauge Specifications
The pattern requires 200-400 meters of sock yarn (approximately 210 meters per 50 grams), with the yardage varying depending on the chosen size. An additional small amount of stash yarn or mohair is specified for creating the ruffles, adding texture and visual dimension to the finished socks.
Needles required: 2-2.5mm (US size 0-1) knitting needles, or the size necessary to obtain the specified gauge. The pattern is worked in the round, a standard technique for sock construction that eliminates the need for seaming.
Additional supplies: A darning needle with a blunt end (tapestry needle) is needed for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the socks.
Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of 28-30 stitches by 40-42 rows in 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working stockinette stitch in the blocked state. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all sizing options.
Yarn Weight and Pattern Specifications
This pattern utilizes lace-weight yarn, which contributes to the delicate, refined appearance of the finished socks. The example shown in the pattern was created using Knit Cosmic Strings Sock yarn (425 meters in 100 grams) and ITO Yarn Sensai in white, demonstrating the pattern's compatibility with premium sock yarns that showcase stitch definition and the ruffled construction details.
The pattern includes sizing for baby, child, youth, and standard adult feet, making it a versatile design suitable for gift-giving or creating coordinating sets for family members.
