What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a cushion cover featuring Rúairí Reinfhia (Rudolph the Reindeer). The finished cushion measures 45 cm by 44 cm when blocked, creating a substantial decorative pillow suitable for sofas, beds, or family room displays. The design combines rustic and festive aesthetics, making it appropriate for Christmas displays or as a permanent whimsical home accent.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The cushion is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary construction method is Stocking Stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knitted fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. The pattern requires working with 4.5 mm (US size 7) needles, available in straight or circular configurations based on crafter preference. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) are also needed for certain sections of the construction. A crochet hook is incorporated for finishing the edging, adding a polished border to the completed cushion cover.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the cushion, creating the smooth, professional appearance of the finished piece
- Crochet edging: Applied using a crochet hook to finish and define the edges of the cushion cover
Yarn and Materials
The pattern specifies Studio Donegal Donegal Aran Tweed yarn, a premium 100% wool yarn with a yardage of 88 yards (80 meters) per 50-gram ball. The Aran weight classification provides excellent stitch definition and creates a substantial, durable fabric ideal for a cushion cover that will receive regular use and handling.
Yarn color requirements:
- 4741 Brown (MC): 4 balls for the main color, forming the primary body of the reindeer
- 4585 Fawn (CC1): 1 ball for contrast color details
- 4754 Red (CC2): 1 ball for Rudolph's signature red nose
- 1443 Báinín (CC3): 1 ball for additional contrast elements
- 4824 Green (CC4): 1 ball for the striped candy cane antler details
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 16 rows equals 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in Stocking Stitch using 4.5 mm needles and blocked to finished dimensions. Proper gauge ensures the cushion cover reaches its intended finished size of 45 cm by 44 cm square.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate project, this cushion requires competence with basic knitting techniques including casting on, working Stocking Stitch, managing multiple yarn colors, and blocking finished pieces. The combination of color work for the reindeer features and the striped antler details adds complexity beyond beginner patterns while remaining accessible to knitters with foundational skills.
