Product Description
This drop-shouldered beauty is worked seamlessly from the top-down with a strand of fingering weight yarn and mohair-silk lace held together throughout.
The stunning lace pattern is initially worked flat on both the front and back until you reach the underarm and join in the round. A simple lace pattern is inserted at the sides for ease in knitting and allowing you some wiggle room to add shaping if you prefer (the pattern as written has no waist or hip shaping—the lace tends to drop and hug your curves on its own, but you can add shaping at the sides if you wish)). Three-quarter sleeves are worked by picking up sts around the armscye and working to the cuff.
The lace pattern requires some lace patterning on WS rows for the time you are working flat—No worries! There are line-by-line directions for the lace whether you work flat or in the round in addition to the charts. Just take your time with them until the pattern becomes more intuitive.
Ruby Tuesday Pullover by Mary Annarella
What Is Being Made
The Ruby Tuesday Pullover is an advanced-level knitted sweater featuring a sophisticated drop-shouldered silhouette. This seamless, top-down construction creates an elegant pullover with three-quarter length sleeves and a graceful, body-skimming fit that relies on the natural drape of lace to enhance curves rather than traditional waist shaping.
Construction Method
This pullover is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning with flat knitting on the front and back pieces until the underarm is reached. At that point, the work transitions to knitting in the round to complete the body. The three-quarter sleeves are added by picking up stitches around the armscye and working downward to the cuff. A separate, simple lace pattern is strategically inserted at the side seams, which serves a dual purpose: it simplifies the knitting process and provides flexibility for adding custom shaping if desired. As written, the pattern features no waist or hip shaping, allowing the lace construction itself to create a flattering, draped fit.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This design showcases advanced lace knitting techniques throughout. The stunning lace pattern requires working lace stitches on both right-side and wrong-side rows during the flat knitting sections. The pattern provides comprehensive support for knitters, including both line-by-line written directions and stitch charts for the lace patterns, making the techniques accessible whether working flat or in the round. Knitters will employ standard seamless sweater construction techniques including picking up stitches around the armscye and working in the round once the body is joined.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Ruby Tuesday Pullover is designed to be worked with two strands held together throughout: a fingering weight yarn combined with a mohair-silk lace yarn. This combination creates a luxurious, delicate fabric with beautiful drape and subtle sheen. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches when measured after blocking, which is typical for lace weight and fingering weight yarns worked together. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized to achieve this gauge with their chosen yarn combination.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an advanced pattern, the Ruby Tuesday Pullover is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with lace knitting, seamless construction, and working from charts. The lace patterning on wrong-side rows during flat knitting sections requires focus and attention to detail, though the included written directions provide guidance alongside the charts to support successful completion.
