Product Description
When I lived in Massachusetts, Rockport was one of my favorite towns to visit. Situated on the coast, it was charming and full of interesting old buildings and shops, which I loved to explore. This shell reminds me of my visits to a friend in Rockport – easy-going, comfortable, and a great fit. It's shaped at the waist, but if you prefer a less curvy fit, leave out the waist and hip shaping, and just work straight from the armholes.
This shell is worked from the top down, beginning at the back shoulders. The back is worked to the armholes, then placed on hold while the front is picked up from the back shoulders and worked to the armholes. Then the back and front are joined and the body is worked to the bottom edge.
Rockport Top-Down Shell #107 by Sue McCain
What is Being Made
The Rockport Top-Down Shell is a women's knitted sleeveless shell garment designed for warm-weather wear. This intermediate-level pattern offers extensive sizing options, ranging from XX-Small through 6X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 26 inches to 66 inches. The design features a top-down construction method, allowing knitters to customize the finished length of the body before binding off.
Construction Technique
This pattern employs a top-down construction method, a popular approach in modern knitting that begins at the neckline and progresses downward toward the hem. This technique offers several advantages: knitters can try on the garment as it develops, easily adjust the body length to their preference, and avoid the need for seaming since the piece is knit in the round. The top-down approach is particularly practical for shell garments, as it allows for seamless shaping at the armholes and neckline.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Rockport Top-Down Shell is worked primarily in stockinette stitch (St st), the most fundamental and versatile stitch in knitting. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the right side. This stitch pattern is ideal for showcasing the qualities of the yarn and creating a refined, elegant appearance suitable for a lightweight summer shell.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: This pattern calls for DK/light worsted weight yarn in a cotton fiber content. The yardage requirements range from 450 yards for the smallest size (XX-Small) to 1,300 yards for the largest size (6X-Large). The model garment was knit using Frog Tree Yarns Pima Cotton, a 100% cotton yarn that provides breathability and a soft drape ideal for warm-weather garments. Each 50-gram skein yields 123 yards. Knitters are advised to purchase additional yarn if they plan to increase the length of the body beyond the pattern specifications.
Needles: The pattern requires two different circular needle sizes, both Size 5 (3.75 mm). A 24-inch circular needle (or longer) is used for the main body of the garment, worked in the round. A shorter 16-inch circular needle in the same size is used for the neckband and armhole edging. Circular needles are essential for this top-down construction, as they accommodate the stitches needed for the larger body sections and allow for seamless in-the-round knitting.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is critical for obtaining the intended finished measurements and proper fit. Knitters are strongly encouraged to knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project, as variations in gauge can significantly affect the final size of the garment.
Additional Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, knitters will need stitch markers in two different colors to mark pattern repeats and construction points, and waste yarn for holding stitches during the construction process. These notions are essential tools for managing the multiple stitch sections and seamless shaping required in top-down garment construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Rockport Top-Down Shell is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The intermediate classification reflects the techniques involved in top-down shaping, working in the round with circular needles, and managing multiple stitch sections simultaneously.
