What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single square quilted wall hanging with a finished size of 28 inches by 28 inches. The design features a large central flower block created from 12 individual fabric petals cut from six coordinating fabrics, appliquéd onto a solid background square. The flower is then framed by multiple borders — a narrow inner border, a pieced scrappy border using alternating fabric segments, and a final outer border — giving the finished piece a structured, layered appearance reminiscent of a blooming wildflower in a meadow setting.

Techniques Used

• Appliqué: The central flower is constructed using an appliqué technique. The inner circle of the flower is pressed under by 1/4 inch all the way around before being centered and pinned onto the background block. The flower is then hand or machine appliquéd around both the outside and inside edges, securing it firmly to the background fabric.
• Template Making: Quilters are instructed to make a template of the Flower Petal shape provided in the pattern, which is then used to cut two petal pieces from each of the six fabrics, yielding 12 petals in total.
• Fabric Manipulation and Dimensional Piecing: Each flower petal is folded lengthwise, pressed, and stitched across the top with backstitching at both ends. The sewn end is then turned right side out and the seam is matched to the pressing line — a technique that creates a three-dimensional, structured petal shape.
• Pressing for Precision: Pressing plays a central role throughout the pattern. The background piece is pressed in half in both directions to find the center, and these pressing lines are used to align the flower's seams accurately before appliquéing. All seams throughout the project are pressed as directed.
• Pieced Border Construction: The pattern includes a pieced border made by stitching 2 1/2-inch background strips to 2 1/2-inch border strips lengthwise, pressing, and then cutting the joined strip sets into 2 1/2-inch segments. These segments are then arranged and stitched together to form checkerboard-style border strips for the sides, top, and bottom of the quilt.
• Strip Piecing: Multiple 1 1/2-inch and 2 1/2-inch strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) and sub-cut into specific lengths for the various border stages, a classic and efficient quilting strip-piecing method.
• Backstitching: Backstitching is specified at key stress points, particularly when joining sets of petals together, to reinforce seams and ensure durability in the finished flower block.
