Riley Blake Serenity Quilt Pattern – Free Downloadable PDF by Emily Taylor Designs

The Riley Blake Serenity pattern is a free downloadable PDF designed by Emily Taylor Designs and published by Riley Blake Designs. It produces a finished quilt measuring 61" x 71", making it a generous lap or throw size that works beautifully as a cozy home accent or a thoughtful handmade gift. This is an intermediate-level quilting project, meaning it is best suited to quilters who already have a working knowledge of basic quilting techniques and terminology, including accurate cutting, pressing seams, and consistent quarter-inch seam allowances.

What Is Being Made

The Serenity pattern produces a pieced quilt top constructed from two distinct repeating block designs — the Serenity O Block and the Serenity X Block — each finishing at 9" x 9". The interplay between these two block types creates a visually dynamic, interlocking pattern across the quilt surface. A total of 15 Serenity O Blocks are made (8 in gray and 7 in teal), and the Serenity X Blocks are constructed using rouge colorways. The finished quilt includes a bound edge and a separate backing.

Block Construction and Techniques

Both block types rely heavily on the Half Square Triangle (HST) unit, one of the most fundamental and versatile building blocks in quilting. Understanding how to make accurate HSTs is essential to achieving the crisp, geometric design that gives Serenity its name and visual calm.

  • Half Square Triangle Units: Made by drawing a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of a 4" Vintage White solid square, then placing it right sides together with a contrasting fabric square of the same size. The paired squares are sewn ¼" on each side of the drawn line, then cut along the line to yield 2 Half Square Triangle Units per pair. Each HST unit is then squared up to 3½" to ensure consistent block sizing.
  • Serenity O Block: Assembled by combining 4 Half Square Triangle Units (in gray or teal), 4 Unit As (in gray or teal), and 1 center square of gray leaves or teal leaves fabric at 3½". Eight O Blocks are made in the gray colorway and seven in the teal colorway.
  • Serenity X Block: Constructed using 8 Half Square Triangle Units made from rouge leaves or rouge dots fabrics paired with Vintage White, creating a bold X-shaped design within the 9" block format.
  • Pressing: Seams are pressed throughout construction to reduce bulk and maintain accuracy, a standard but critical step in achieving flat, well-aligned quilt blocks.
  • Binding: The quilt is finished with a traditional bound edge using 5/8 yard of binding fabric.

Stitches and Sewing Techniques

  • Straight stitch throughout, sewn on a standard sewing machine
  • Consistent ¼" seam allowance used for all piecing — measurements in the pattern include this allowance
  • Right sides together sewing for all pieced units unless otherwise noted
  • Diagonal line marking on the wrong side of fabric squares to guide accurate HST construction

Fabric and Materials

The Serenity quilt is designed specifically around the Riley Blake Designs fabric collection, with each fabric referenced by its precise product code. The palette combines rouge, gray, and teal colorways across several print styles — leaves, flowers, and dots — anchored by a neutral Vintage White solid. The full fabric requirements are as follows:

  • 1¼ yards – Rouge Main (C2800 Rouge)
  • 1/8 yard – Gray Leaves (C2802 Gray)
  • ½ yard – Rouge Leaves (C2802 Rouge)
  • 1/8 yard
