Riley Blake Santa Lane Quilt Pattern by My Mind's Eye – Free Downloadable PDF

The Santa Lane quilt pattern, designed by Jen Allyson for My Mind's Eye and featuring fabrics from Riley Blake Designs, is a charming holiday quilt that finishes at 56⅝" x 72¼". This intermediate-level project combines classic on-point block setting with decorative sashing and foundation paper piecing to create a festive, structured quilt ideal for the holiday season. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF and requires a basic working knowledge of quilting technique, terminology, and foundation piecing before you begin.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a lap or throw-sized holiday quilt measuring approximately 56⅝" by 72¼". The design centers around 9" x 9" finished blocks arranged in an on-point layout, meaning the blocks are rotated 45 degrees and set diagonally across the quilt. The composition includes Star Blocks, a Center Block, decorative Post and Sashing elements, and Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles to fill in the diagonal edges of the quilt center. The overall effect is a structured, medallion-influenced holiday quilt with a classic, elegant feel.

Quilt Blocks and Design Elements

Star Block

The Star Block is the primary repeating unit of this quilt, and it is the most technically involved element of the pattern. A total of 12 Star Blocks are constructed, each finishing at 9" x 9". Each block is assembled from several components:

  • Paper Pieced Units – One section of the Star Block is constructed using foundation paper piecing (FPP). A total of 48 Paper Pieced Units are made (4 from each print), using a provided template, 4" Pina Colada solid squares (position A1), and assorted print 2½" x 5" rectangles (positions A2 and A3). Each unit is trimmed to 3½" x 3½" after piecing.
  • Four Paper Pieced Units are combined with four 3½" Pina Colada solid squares and one assorted print 3½" square to complete each Star Block.

Center Block and Additional Blocks

The quilt also includes a distinct Center Block that anchors the on-point layout. Additional 9½" x 9½" squares are cut from a variety of prints to serve as feature blocks within the quilt center. These prints include:

  • Green main
  • Red main
  • Green greetings
  • Gold greetings
  • Green damask
  • Gold deer

These large-print squares showcase the holiday fabric collection and require minimal piecing, allowing the fabric designs themselves to shine as focal points within the quilt layout.

Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles

Because the blocks are set on point, Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles are needed to complete the edges and corners of the quilt center. These are cut from Pina Colada solid fabric:

  • 17" x 17" squares are cut twice diagonally (an X cut) to yield 12 Setting Triangles, of which 10 are used.
  • 10½" x 10½" squares are cut once diagonally to yield 4 Corner Triangles.

This method of cutting setting and corner triangles on the bias ensures that the outer edges of the quilt are cut on the straight grain, which helps prevent stretching and distortion during assembly and quilting.

Techniques Used

  • Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) – Used to construct the star point units within each Star Block. This technique involves sewing fabric pieces
