Called To Serve Panel Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs

About This Quilt Pattern

The Called To Serve Panel Quilt is a beginner-friendly quilting project designed by Deena Rutter and published by Riley Blake Designs in 2020. Available as a free downloadable PDF, this pattern produces a striking 67½" x 67½" finished quilt that centers on a bold missionary-themed panel fabric as its focal point. The design is ideal for quilters who are just developing their skills, requiring only a basic knowledge of quilting technique and terminology. The pattern is available for download and should be checked against the Riley Blake Designs website for any revisions before beginning.

Design Overview

The quilt is built around a large fussy-cut 35½" x 35½" center square taken from the Sage Missionary Panel (P9295 Sage), centered over the world map motif printed on the panel. Surrounding this central panel are pieced star blocks, sashing, and multiple borders that frame the design and add visual interest. The remainder of the panel fabric can be saved and used to personalize the quilt top further, making this a highly customizable project.

Fabrics and Materials Used

This pattern is designed specifically around the Riley Blake Designs Called To Serve fabric collection. The required fabrics are:

  • 1 Sage Missionary Panel (P9295 Sage) – the large center focal panel
  • ¼ yard Sage Sister Main (SC9291 Sage)
  • ⅛ yard Multi Sister Main (SC9291 Multi)
  • ⅙ yard Cream Sister (C9293 Cream)
  • ½ yard Charcoal Temple (SC9294 Charcoal)
  • 1 yard Coral Swiss Dot (C670 Coral)
  • 1⅞ yards Gold Sparkle Blossom (SC730 Gold) – the largest yardage requirement, used extensively throughout the quilt body
  • ⅝ yard Sweet Mint Kisses (C210 Sweet Mint) – this yardage includes the binding fabric

Each fabric plays a specific role in the quilt's color palette, combining sage greens, coral, gold, charcoal, cream, and sweet mint for a warm and coordinated finish.

Cutting Requirements and Preparation

The pattern provides detailed cutting instructions for each fabric. Quilters work with width-of-fabric (WOF) strips as the primary cutting unit, which is a standard and efficient approach in quilting. Key cuts include:

  • Charcoal Temple: Cut 4 strips at 3½" x WOF, sub-cut into 8 rectangles measuring 3½" x 20½"
  • Coral Swiss Dot: Cut 4 strips at 5½" x WOF for Border 2; cut 2 strips at 2" x WOF, sub-cut into 32 squares at 2"
  • Gold Sparkle Blossom: Cut 13 strips at 3½" x WOF, sub-cut into 16 rectangles at 3½" x 20½" and 60 squares at 3½"; cut 4 strips at 2½" x WOF for Border 1; cut 1 strip at 6" x WOF, sub-cut into 2 squares at 6" and 4 squares at 3½"
  • Sweet Mint Kisses: Cut 7 strips at 2¼" x WOF for binding; cut 2 strips at 2" x WOF, sub-cut into 32 squares at 2"
  • Sage Sister Main: Cut 1 strip at 6" x WOF for star block construction

All seam allowances are ¼", which is the standard in quilting. Quilters are instructed to sew with right sides together throughout unless otherwise noted.
