What is Being Made

The Retro Bag is a robust, everyday carry bag designed with structural integrity and practical features. This crochet project creates a standalone bag with a zip closure, optional poppers for added security, and the choice to add a fabric lining for durability and polish. The bag is engineered with reinforcement throughout its construction, including stabilizing elements in the base, sides, and handles, ensuring it maintains its shape during regular use.

Construction Techniques

The Retro Bag employs a multi-stage construction method that builds the bag from the base upward. The bottom is worked in two separate pieces, which are then joined together with stabilizing material sandwiched between them for reinforcement. Once the base is complete, stitches are picked up along each long edge to work the shaped, patterned sides of the bag. The short handles and short sides are constructed next, also worked as double thickness with stabilizing material in between for durability. The long handle is finished last, worked in slip stitches for both strength and decorative effect. This pattern incorporates mosaic crochet techniques, a colorwork method that creates patterned designs while maintaining structural integrity. The mosaic technique is worked with two rows per color, allowing for intricate visual patterns without the complexity of traditional color-changing methods.

The Retro Bag is designed to work with DK to Worsted weight cotton yarn. The sample shown was created using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Charcoal, requiring 2 x 100g balls (100% Mercerized Cotton, with each ball providing 170 meters or 186 yards). Cotton yarn is ideal for bags as it offers durability, structure, and a refined appearance. The pattern includes instructions for optional lining, which would require additional fabric materials beyond the yarn.
