What is Being Made

Resonance is a knitted shawl designed by Kelly Menzies and originally published in Let's Knit! Magazine in October 2013. This is a versatile wrap-style shawl available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished chest measurements from 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) up to 152–158 cm (60–62 inches). The shawl features a consistent width of 28 cm (11 inches) across all sizes, with length varying from 94 cm (37 inches) in the smallest size to 174 cm (68.5 inches) in the largest. The design is suitable for beginners, making it an excellent introduction to shawl knitting.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Resonance employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The shawl is worked using basic stitch patterns, primarily in stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern is provided in written format with standard knitting abbreviations, allowing knitters to follow clear row-by-row instructions. The design incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project.

The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches including:

The sample shawl shown was knitted in Mirasol Sulka Chunky in shade #242 Blackberry, a luxurious yarn choice that showcases the pattern beautifully.

The pattern calls for 6.5mm (US 10.5) straight knitting needles, appropriately sized for chunky weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions include two stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, six medium-sized buttons for optional closure or decoration, and a row counter to track progress through the written instructions.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 20 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements. With nine carefully graded sizes accommodating chest fits from 71–76 cm to 152–158 cm, knitters can customize the shawl to their preferred fit and drape.
