Top down knit, perfect for throwing over a dress in cooler months
Redhill Sweater by Emma Boyd
What is Being Made
Redhill is a seamless, top-down knitted sweater designed by Emma Boyd. This intermediate-level garment features a sophisticated construction method that creates a polished, professional finish. The sweater offers versatility in styling with multiple length and sleeve options to suit different preferences and body types.
Construction Technique
The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down, eliminating the need for finishing seams and creating a comfortable, integrated garment. Short rows are strategically incorporated to raise the back of the neck, providing improved fit and comfort around the neckline area. The yoke shaping is guided by a chart pattern, allowing for precise stitch placement and visual interest in the upper body.
Raglan shaping is worked into the yoke before the sleeves are separated from the body. This technique improves the overall fit of the garment by creating a more anatomically correct shoulder line. Once the yoke is complete, sleeve stitches are placed on hold while the body is finished independently, then the sleeve stitches are returned to the needle for completion.
A distinctive feature of this pattern is that the entire sweater is knitted inside out. This unconventional approach means that what appears to be reverse stockinette stitch on the finished garment is actually achieved through knitting rather than purling, reducing fatigue during the knitting process. The chart symbols for cables and decreases/increases may appear reversed due to this inside-out construction, but they are correct as charted and should not be modified.
Stitch Techniques
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary fabric base, worked in reverse due to the inside-out construction method
- Cable Stitches – Decorative elements worked from the provided chart
- Raglan Increases – Strategic shaping increases that create the sleeve cap and shoulder definition
- Short Rows – Used at the neckline to create proper back neck shaping
- Decreases – Chart-based decreases for structured shaping
Customization Options
The Redhill pattern provides flexibility for personal preference and fit adjustments. Knitters can choose between a cropped or longer body length, allowing the sweater to be tailored to individual style preferences. Sleeve length options include cropped sleeves or full-length sleeves, making this design adaptable for different seasons and occasions. Beyond these preset options, the pattern encourages modifications to length according to personal preference.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that creates a refined drape and smooth stitch definition ideal for showcasing the cable and chart work. The pattern requires appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn and the ability to work with stitch holders for managing stitches during the top-down construction process.
Skill Level
Redhill is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless construction, chart reading, short row shaping, and raglan increases. The inside-out knitting method adds a technical element that experienced knitters will appreciate for its efficiency and the finished aesthetic it creates.
