Ranka Sweater by Janita Koskinen

What is Being Made

Ranka is a knitted sweater designed by Janita Koskinen and published in 2018. The name "Ranka" means "spine" in English, inspired by the graceful way fingers trace down the backbone. This pullover sweater features a distinctive lace pattern that repeats across the sleeves and down the back of the garment, creating an elegant vertical emphasis. The design is available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL, making it accessible to a wide range of body types. The sweater includes a luxurious turtleneck collar that adds warmth and sophistication to the finished piece.

Construction Technique

Ranka is constructed using a bottom-up knitting method, with the body and sleeves worked as separate pieces before being sewn together. This approach allows knitters to try on the garment as they progress and make adjustments to fit. The sweater features set-in sleeves, which provide a classic, tailored silhouette. The neckline is finished with a seamlessly worked turtleneck collar that is knitted in the round, eliminating the need for seaming at the neck and creating a smooth, comfortable finish.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Ranka sweater incorporates several key stitch techniques to create its visual appeal and structure. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic canvas for the design. The signature element of the sweater is the lace pattern that repeats on the sleeves and back panel, adding delicate openwork detail and visual interest. The hem and cuffs are finished with ribbing that features plenty of texture, providing elasticity and a polished edge that helps the sweater maintain its shape during wear and washing.

Yarn and Materials

Ranka is designed to be worked with fingering weight yarn, also classified as 4 ply, which creates a lightweight yet durable fabric. The pattern provides yardage requirements that vary by size, ranging from 250 to 400 grams depending on which yarn option is used.

Two yarn options are specified in the pattern:

  • Väinämöinen by Knitlob's Lair: A blend of 75% wool and 25% polyamide, offering durability and elasticity. This yarn provides 400 meters or 437 yards per 100 grams. The suggested colorway is Hämy, with yardage requirements of 250 to 400 grams.
  • Venla by Novita: Also composed of 75% wool and 25% polyamide for similar performance characteristics. This yarn yields 420 meters or 459 yards per 100 grams. The recommended colorway is Noki, requiring 75 to 150 grams of yarn.

The pattern calls for 3.50 mm needles (US size 4) or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. Additional needle sizes are provided for gauge adjustment: 3.25 mm (US size 3), 3.75 mm (US size 5), and 5 mm (US size 8) needles. Cable needles are also required for working the lace pattern. Stockinette stitch gauge is specified in the pattern to ensure proper fit across the six available sizes.

Difficulty Level

Ranka is classified as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle lace patterns and set-in sleeves. The combination of lace work, shaping, and seaming requires attention to detail and some experience with garment construction.
