Ranch Legwarmers in Rowan Kid Classic – Knitting Pattern by Sarah Hatton
The Ranch Legwarmers is a knitting pattern designed by Sarah Hatton and published by Rowan. This pattern produces a pair of classic, cosy legwarmers with a clean, structured silhouette that tapers gently from calf to ankle. Rated as intermediate difficulty, the design is an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable with basic shaping and rib techniques and are ready to refine their finishing skills.
What Is Being Made
The pattern creates a pair of knitted legwarmers designed to be worn over the leg and into boots or worn as a standalone accessory. The finished legwarmers feature ribbed cuffs at both the top and bottom edges, with a smooth stocking stitch body in between. A subtle decrease shaping narrows the tube slightly through the length of the leg, giving the legwarmers a more fitted, flattering profile rather than a simple straight tube. The sample shown in the pattern is worked in Bittersweet 866, a warm, rich colourway from the Rowan Kid Classic range.
Techniques Used
- Casting on – the pattern begins with a cast-on of 46 stitches
- Ribbing – a 2x2 rib is worked at both the cast-on and cast-off edges to create neat, stretchy cuffs that grip the leg and boot top
- Stocking stitch – the main body of the legwarmer is worked in classic stocking stitch, alternating knit and purl rows, creating a smooth, flat fabric surface
- Decrease shaping – single decreases are worked at each end of specified rows to gently taper the legwarmer from 46 stitches down to 42 stitches, giving a more tailored fit
- Casting off in rib – the final edge is cast off in pattern to maintain elasticity at the lower cuff
- Mattress stitch seaming – the back seam of each legwarmer is joined using mattress stitch, a technique that creates an almost invisible, neat vertical seam on the right side of the fabric
Stitches Used
- 2x2 Rib – worked as knit 2, purl 2 alternating across the row, used for the cuff sections at the top and bottom of each legwarmer
- Stocking Stitch – the primary stitch pattern for the body, worked flat with knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 19 stitches and 25 rows to 10cm/4in measured over stocking stitch using 5mm (US 8) needles. Achieving the correct tension is important for ensuring the legwarmers reach the intended length of approximately 36cm/9½in in the stocking stitch body section before the lower rib is worked. Knitters are encouraged to work a tension swatch before beginning.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Rowan Kid Classic, an aran weight yarn, in 2 x 50gm balls. The sample is shown in Bittersweet 866. Rowan Kid Classic is a luxuriously soft blend known for its light halo and excellent stitch definition, making it well suited to both the smooth stocking stitch body and the structured rib sections of this design.
- Needles: 1 pair of 5mm (US 8) straight knitting needles
