Product Description

This is a knitting pattern to show you how to knit stunning multi-colour cable beanies for the whole family - there are instructions for various sizes from 47cm - 58cm head circumference (approx. 1 years - adult).

You'll need chunky (bulky) weight yarn and 6mm needles: 1 x 100g skein of yarn in the main colour, and yarn in up to 6 other colours. Or of course you could do it in one single colour - it would still look stunning.

As the pattern is a PDF, and to make things easier, I've written the pattern so that you can print out just the pages that you need for your size and ignore the rest.

The pattern is aimed at knitters who're confident working with colours and / or a cable needle. I've included very detailed written instructions lavishly illustrated with a photo tutorial, but you'll find it easier if you're not a novice at both!

Rainbow Multi-Cable Beanie

What is Being Made

The Rainbow Multi-Cable Beanie is a knitted hat designed by Jay Greengrass for Rainbow Knits. This versatile beanie can be created in a single solid colour, subtle tonal variations, or vibrant rainbow colourways, making it suitable for various aesthetic preferences. The pattern is written in UK knitting terminology and is suitable for both children and adults, with sizing based on head circumference measurements rather than age.

Knitting Techniques

This advanced-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure. The beanie features prominent cable work, which forms the foundation of the design. The construction method offers flexibility: knitters can work the main beanie portion seamlessly in the round after completing the cabled brim, or alternatively knit the piece back and forth flat and seam it up the back. The pattern requires experience working with colours and familiarity with cable needles before beginning.

The construction begins with cabling the brim to fit the intended wearer, followed by picking up stitches along the edge to continue into the main body of the beanie. This two-stage approach allows for customisation of the brim fit before committing to the larger garment piece.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

Essential knitting skills required for this pattern include:

  • Casting on to begin the brim section
  • Cable stitches for the decorative cabled brim
  • Knit stitches for the main fabric
  • Decreasing to shape the crown of the beanie
  • Casting off to finish the garment
  • Picking up stitches along the brim edge to transition to the main body

Materials

This pattern is designed to be worked in chunky yarn, which creates a quick-knitting, substantial fabric ideal for a warm winter beanie. The pattern requires a cable needle for executing the cable stitches that define the brim. Appropriate needles for chunky yarn weight are necessary, though specific needle sizes are detailed within the full pattern document.
