Thanks to his unique construction, the only sewing you’ll need to do is closing the openings!
His name means “close lizard" and he’s technically not a dinosaur. His snout was short but it could open wide. They had 4 paddle-shaped 'flippers that allowed them to swim. The real ones could get as big as 20m, this one is only 4.7"/12cm from head to tail.
Rainbow Dinosaur - Plesiosaurus by Justyna Kacprzak
What Is Being Made
This is a crocheted amigurumi-style toy plesiosaurus designed by Justyna Kacprzak. The finished plush measures approximately 4.7 inches (12 centimeters) from head to tail, making it a compact collectible craft project. While commonly referred to as a dinosaur, the plesiosaurus is technically a marine reptile that lived during the Mesozoic Era. The name dolichodeirus means "close lizard," and this pattern recreates the creature's distinctive features including its short snout, wide-opening mouth, and four paddle-shaped flippers that enabled swimming in ancient seas.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs continuous round construction throughout, eliminating the need to join rounds with slip stitches. This technique creates seamless spiraling fabric that is ideal for stuffed toy construction. The pattern specifically recommends working certain sections in front loops only, particularly when crocheting four or fewer stitches in a round, as this approach simplifies the construction process. The invisible decrease technique is emphasized for shaping thinner parts of the toy, creating a polished, professional finish on the completed plesiosaurus.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) worked in continuous rounds
- Invisible decrease (worked in front loops) for seamless shaping
- Front loop only stitching for specialized sections
Materials
While specific yarn weight and hook size are detailed in the complete pattern, this project requires yarn suitable for amigurumi construction and an appropriately sized crochet hook. Fiberfill stuffing is needed to fill the completed toy parts before assembly. The rainbow color variation suggests using multiple yarn colors to create the vibrant, multi-colored effect referenced in the design name.
