Project Overview
The Rain Drops Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by Jo's Crafty Hook. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a versatile neck accessory in multiple sizes, including Teen, Small Adult, Medium Adult, and Large Adult dimensions. The cowl showcases the elegant Herringbone Double Crochet stitch, making it an accessible introduction to this decorative technique for crocheters new to the craft.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl—a tubular neck accessory that drapes around the shoulders and neck. The Rain Drops Cowl is constructed as a seamless or joined circular piece, offering comfortable wear and versatile styling options. The design is scalable across four different sizing options, allowing crafters to customize the fit for various body types and preferences.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Rain Drops Cowl employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners while introducing the specialized Herringbone Double Crochet stitch. The pattern uses standard crochet construction methods including foundation chains, turning chains, and joining techniques. The stitch count is designed as a multiple of 6, allowing for easy adjustments if you need to create a smaller or larger size beyond the four provided options.
Stitches Featured
- Herringbone Double Crochet (HBDC): The signature stitch of this pattern, created by yarning over, inserting the hook into the stitch, yarning over again, pulling through, then working through loops in a specific sequence. This stitch creates a textured, visually interesting fabric with a distinctive herringbone appearance.
- Single Crochet (SC): Used in the foundation row to establish the base of the cowl
- Chain (CH): Used for foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Half Double Crochet 2 Together (HDC2TOG): A decrease stitch included in the pattern abbreviations for shaping options
- Foundation Double Crochet (FDC): An alternative foundation method available for starting the cowl
- Slip Stitch (SS): Used for joining rounds and finishing
Materials Required
Yarn: The Rain Drops Cowl requires 100 to 300 yards of yarn, depending on which size you select. The pattern calls for #4 Worsted Weight Yarn or Aran Weight Yarn, both of which are medium-weight options that work beautifully with the Herringbone Double Crochet stitch. The yardage range accommodates the Teen through Large Adult sizes.
Hook and Tools: A US Hook H/5 mm is used throughout this pattern. The gauge is established at 7 Herringbone Double Crochet stitches by 5 rows equaling 2 inches, which helps ensure your finished cowl matches the intended dimensions. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Pattern Notes
This pattern includes important gauge information to help you achieve the correct finished size. The gauge swatch instructions clarify that Chain 1 does not count as a stitch in the first row, while Chain 3 does count as a stitch in subsequent rows—a distinction that affects stitch counting and pattern accuracy. The pattern is written for multiple sizes with clear sizing information, and the modular stitch count allows for customization beyond the provided options.
