Product Description

Waaay back when, before I was born, my folks had a hippie-dippie shop in the town I grew up in called Radiation. They sold bell-bottoms, waterbeds, and other counter-culture goods. The basement of the house I grew up in was the perfect suburban basement, with old couches, a TV, a pool table, and, taking up one whole wall, the wooden, hand-painted sign from that very shop. This scarf reminds me of the Radiation sign – 70s letters, curving around a sun, with thick beams radiating from the center. It makes me think of home, and youth, and good times in that basement underneath that sign. I hope you’ll get some of those good vibes while making and wearing this oversized scarf.

Yarn: 705 yards/645 meters sport-weight or 750 yards/686 meters worsted-weight yarn, split between two colors as follows.

**Finished measurements: **72” long from tip to tip along top edge, 22” wide at widest edge of triangle.

Radiation Scarf by Shannon Squire

What is Being Made

The Radiation Scarf is a knitted accessory design created by independent designer Shannon Squire. This scarf project features a striking two-color colorwork construction that creates a radiation or geometric pattern effect through strategic color placement and stitch work.

Yarn Materials

The Radiation Scarf is available in two yarn weight options to suit different preferences and desired finished dimensions:

  • Sport-weight version: Approximately 705 yards total yarn, divided between two colors. The pattern features 375 yards of Schoppel Starke 6 in colorway 2137 (Color A) and 330 yards of Quince & Co. Chickadee in colorway Frost (Color B).
  • Worsted-weight version: Approximately 750 yards total yarn, using 400 yards color A and 350 yards color B.

Needles and Notions

Needle selection depends on the chosen yarn weight version:

  • Sport-weight version: US #5/3.75 mm needles (or appropriate size to achieve correct gauge) for working flat.
  • Worsted-weight version: US #9/5.5 mm needles (or appropriate size to achieve correct gauge) for working flat.

Additional notions required include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Radiation Scarf employs garter stitch as its primary stitch technique. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, produces a textured, reversible fabric with prominent horizontal ridges. This classic stitch is ideal for two-color colorwork projects as it provides excellent stitch definition and allows color changes to create clear, geometric patterns.

The pattern utilizes two-color knitting to construct the radiation design. By alternating between Color A and Color B throughout the knitting process, the scarf develops its distinctive geometric or radiating visual effect.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this intermediate-level project:

  • Sport-weight version: 22 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking.
  • Worsted-weight version: 18 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking.

Blocking is recommended after completion to set the stitches and achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with two-color techniques and manage multiple yarn colors throughout the project.
