Product Description
Cheerful slipped-stitch pumpkins add a touch of whimsy to the legs of these socks. Wavy cables in the ribbed portion keep the knitting interesting and gently suggest vines.
The pattern assumes familiarity with cabling and basic cuff-down sock construction techniques. It will go a lot faster if you know how to work cables without a cable needle - I have not included a tutorial for this in the pattern since there are a number of good ones already available. The cable pattern is currently provided only in charted form.
Three sizes are included: Small (60 stitches) Medium (65 stitches) Large (70 stitches)
You will change your gauge and stitch count in the pumpkin section to make up for the reduced elasticity, so choose a size that fits for the ribbing.
Pumpkin Socks by Nicole Simmons
What Is Being Made
Pumpkin Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Nicole Simmons that creates cheerful, whimsical socks featuring decorative pumpkin motifs. The socks are available in three sizes: Women's Small, Medium, and Large. These are functional, wearable socks that combine practical construction with festive seasonal design elements, making them suitable for everyday wear or as thoughtful handmade gifts.
Design Features and Techniques
The pattern showcases several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add visual interest and depth to the finished socks. Slipped-stitch pumpkins form the main decorative element on the leg portion of the socks, creating a charming, dimensional texture. The ribbed cuff area incorporates wavy cables that serve a dual purpose: they maintain visual engagement throughout the knitting process while subtly suggesting vine motifs that complement the pumpkin theme. This thoughtful design integration creates a cohesive seasonal aesthetic.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which provides a smooth canvas for the decorative elements. The slipped-stitch technique creates the pumpkin designs through strategic yarn overs and slipped stitches that build texture and visual definition. Wavy cables in the ribbed sections add structural interest and gentle shaping around the leg. The gauge is set at 16 stitches and 24 rounds over 2 inches in stockinette stitch, which ensures proper fit and drape. The pattern allows for customization by adjusting both gauge and stitch count to modify the pumpkin panel sizing and overall ease within each size option.
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires fingering weight sock yarn, which is the standard choice for sock knitting due to its durability and appropriate thickness. The yarn requirements are approximately 100 grams of fingering weight yarn in the main color and approximately 10 grams of fingering weight yarn in a contrast color. The sample shown uses Shibui Sock yarn in 'Seaweed' for the main color and Slackford Studio Pathway Sock yarn in 'Citrus' for the contrast pumpkin details, though any compatible fingering weight yarns may be substituted.
Knitting needles required include one set of 2.25 mm (US size 1) double pointed needles and one set of 2.5 mm (US size 1.5) double pointed needles, or one size larger than the first set. Double pointed needles are the traditional choice for sock knitting, allowing for seamless construction in the round. Additional supplies include a darning needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and size adjustments.
Yarn Weight and Skill Level
The pattern is designed for intermediate knitters who have experience with basic sock construction and are ready to incorporate decorative techniques such as slipped-stitch colorwork and cable stitches. The combination of 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights in fingering categories provides the appropriate gauge and fabric characteristics for socks that are both comfortable and long-wearing. Intermediate crafters will appreciate the balance of technical challenge and achievable construction that this pattern offers.
