Pryanik Pullover by Jenny Faifel

What Is Being Made

The Pryanik Pullover is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Jenny Faifel. This intermediate-level garment features a classic pullover construction with raglan sleeves, making it a versatile wardrobe staple. The sweater is available in ten different sizes, ranging from a 33.4-inch bust measurement up to 61 inches, accommodating a wide range of body types and fit preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pullover employs several foundational knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The garment is constructed using circular needles for seamless knitting, which reduces finishing work and creates a more polished final product. The design incorporates raglan sleeve construction, a technique where sleeves are increased gradually from the neckline down to the underarm, creating diagonal seam lines from the neck to the armpit. Removable markers are used throughout the project to track stitch placement and pattern repeats, while scrap yarn serves as a temporary stitch holder during construction. The sweater is finished with a ribbed neckline and cuffs, which require knitting on smaller needles to create the characteristic elastic edge.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used in the Pryanik Pullover is Stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric that forms the body and sleeves of the sweater. Stockinette stitch consists of alternating rows of knit and purl stitches, producing the recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side of the fabric. Ribbing is used for the neckline and cuffs, combining knit and purl stitches in alternating columns to create an elastic, fitted edge that helps the sweater stay in place.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Pryanik Pullover is designed to be knitted with DK weight yarn, approximately 125 yards per 50-gram skein. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using The Farmer's Daughter Fibers Craggy Tweed, a blend of 85% Merino wool and 15% Nylon (Polyamide). This yarn composition provides warmth and softness from the merino while the nylon adds durability and elasticity. The Craggy Tweed yields 231 yards per 100-gram skein. Total yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 1050 yards for the smallest size up to 1975 yards for the largest size.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US #4 (3.50mm) circular needles in a 16-inch length for working the neckline ribbing. US #6 (4.00mm) circular needles are used for the main body and are available in both 24-inch and 16-inch lengths, with 16-inch needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) used for sleeve work. Additional tools include scrap yarn for holding stitches, removable markers for tracking pattern sections, a crochet hook for picking up stitches along edges, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 27 rows per 4-inch square when working in Stockinette stitch using US #6 (4.00mm) needles, measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements. The completed sweater features a bust measurement ranging from 33.4 inches in the smallest size to 61 inches in the largest size, with upper bicep measurements from 10.8 inches to 20 inches. The sleeve length from underarm to cuff measures 17.5 inches across all sizes, and the garment features a raglan sleeve construction that creates a comfortable, relaxed fit.
