Prunella the Peach Knitted Toy by Nixknittingsticks
What is Being Made
Prunella the Peach is a charming knitted stuffed toy designed by Nixknittingsticks. This beginner-friendly amigurumi-style project creates a small decorative peach character, perfect for gift-giving or personal collection. The finished toy measures approximately 12cm x 14cm, making it an ideal size for display or play.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The toy is created by knitting flat or in-the-round pieces that are subsequently stuffed and assembled. Knitting allows for precise stitch control, which is essential in this design to ensure the toy stuffing remains fully contained within the finished fabric without showing through the knitted surface.
Stitches and Techniques Used
Prunella the Peach employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P) – Used to create texture variation and shaping
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – A right-leaning decrease stitch used to shape the toy's body and create contoured features
- Kfb (Knit Front and Back) – An increase stitch that adds stitches to expand the fabric, essential for building the rounded peach shape
- Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit) – A left-leaning decrease stitch that provides alternative shaping options for refined decreases
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project requires 2.75mm knitting needles and is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for small toy projects. The total yarn requirement is approximately 20 grams, making this an economical project ideal for yarn stash use.
The specific yarn colors and quantities are:
- Stylecraft Special DK 1026 Apricot – 5gm (primary peach body color)
- James C Brett Top Value 845 Green – 1gm (for leaves or stem details)
- Stylecraft Special DK 1004 Dark Brown – 1gm (for details)
- James C Brett Top Value 8430 Black – 1gm (for eye pupils)
- James C Brett Top Value 8428 White – 1gm (for eye highlights)
- Stylecraft Special DK 1827 Fuchsia Purple – small amount (for accent details)
Additional materials include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together, and approximately 25 grams of toy stuffing to fill the completed peach body.
Gauge and Construction Notes
While a specific gauge is not critical for this toy project, the pattern emphasizes the importance of knitting with sufficient tightness to prevent toy stuffing from showing through the fabric. This consideration is particularly important on the body and eye areas where visibility of the filling would compromise the finished appearance. Beginners should practice maintaining consistent, moderately tight tension throughout the project to achieve professional-looking results.
Difficulty Level
Prunella the Peach is classified as a beginner level project, making it accessible to knitters new to toy construction. The pattern uses only basic knitting stitches and straightforward shaping techniques, providing an excellent introduction to amigurumi-style knitting without overwhelming complexity.
