Product Description
Granny squares are all good and fun, but I have a special love for granny diamonds, they are both fun to make, and can be combined into endless combinations. For this blanket I have organised the diamonds in a chevron style pattern to add some extra interest. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! The pattern includes both UK and US terminology versions, for US terminology, start on pg6. Blank colour template on pg4 for creating your own colour combinations!

What is Being Made
The Prismatical blanket is a downloadable crochet pattern for an intermediate-level throw blanket measuring 100cm long by 75cm wide. This blanket is constructed from individual granny diamonds organized in a chevron-style pattern to create visual interest and movement across the finished piece.
Design Concept
Designer Craftling Designs UK has created a blanket that celebrates the versatility of granny diamonds—a variation on the classic granny square motif. Rather than using traditional granny squares, the designer chose granny diamonds for their unique shape and the endless combination possibilities they offer. The diamonds are arranged in a chevron formation, which adds dynamic visual appeal to the blanket while maintaining the meditative, modular construction process that makes diamond-based projects satisfying to create.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern uses fundamental crochet stitches worked in the round to build each individual diamond unit. The primary stitches employed include:
- Chain stitches (ch) – Used to create the foundation ring and spacing throughout
- Treble stitches (tr) – The main stitch building the diamond structure
- Double treble stitches (dtr) – Used for additional height and texture variation
- Slip stitches (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create a seamless circular construction
- Chain spaces (ch sp) – Openwork areas that add lace-like qualities to the diamonds
Each granny diamond begins with a foundation ring created by chaining 4 stitches and slip stitching into the first chain. The diamonds are then built outward in rounds, with treble and double treble stitches creating the characteristic pointed shape. Individual diamonds measure 14cm long by 10cm wide when measured tip to tip.
Construction and Assembly
The blanket is constructed as a modular project where multiple diamonds are crocheted separately and then joined together. The chevron arrangement requires careful placement of the 10 different colored diamonds to create the directional pattern. A border is added around the perimeter using the Vanilla Cream yarn to frame and finish the blanket.
Materials
The Prismatical blanket pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK, a lightweight yarn suitable for creating drape and breathability in a throw blanket. The yarn is worked with a 3.75mm (F) crochet hook.
Yarn quantities:
- Joining and border: 3 balls of Vanilla Cream (306 meters or 122.5 grams total)
- Diamonds: 1 ball each of 10 different colors (106 meters or 42.5 grams used per individual color)
The sample shown uses specific colors detailed in a reference table within the pattern document. The cotton DK weight provides a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for a versatile blanket that works across seasons.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes the crocheter is comfortable with basic stitches and can follow multi-round instructions. The modular nature of the project makes it manageable—completing one diamond at a time—though the final assembly and chevron arrangement require attention to pattern placement and color sequencing.
