Product Description

This sweet little knitting pattern is for a tiny premature baby to newborn ribbed hat with mock cable brim, in 4 different sizes, using wonderfully soft 4ply (UK) knitting yarn. I created it because I wanted to make tiny baby clothes that were practical as well as beautiful for premature babies. The yarn is machine washable acrylic and the stretchy rib is perfect for staying on. The hats are knitted in the round using 3mm double pointed needles. This design uses 4 ply (UK) yarn which is really soft to the skin as well as machine washable. 3mm dpns. It is written in English using UK terms. Sizes: 1 1/2lb - 8lb baby (4 sizes) 8 1/2 inches - 14 inches (4 sizes)

Premature to Newborn Baby Mock Cable Ribbed Hat

What Is Being Made

This is a mock cable ribbed hat designed by Angela Turner, specifically engineered for premature and newborn babies. The pattern provides four different sizes to accommodate babies at various stages of early development, from premature infants weighing 1½lb up to 8lb babies. Each size features a different circumference measurement, ensuring a proper fit as your baby grows through those critical early months.

Sizes and Measurements

  • Size 1: For 1½lb – 2lb babies; circumference 8½"
  • Size 2: For 2lb – 4lb babies; circumference 10"
  • Size 3: For 4lb – 6lb babies; circumference 12"
  • Size 4: For 6lb – 8lb babies; circumference 14"

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project uses several fundamental knitting techniques to create its distinctive textured appearance. The hat is constructed primarily using stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The mock cable effect is achieved through strategic stitch manipulations rather than traditional cable twists, making it more accessible than true cable knitting while still producing an attractive textured finish.

Key stitches and techniques employed include:

  • Garter stitch – creates a bumpy, textured fabric often used for borders or specific design elements
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count for shaping
  • Purl 2 together (p2tog) – another decrease method used during construction
  • Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (skpo) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping the crown
  • Yarn forward (yfwd) – creates eyelet holes or lace effects
  • Round (rnd) knitting – the hat is worked in the round using double pointed needles

Materials Required

The pattern calls for Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply yarn, a soft and gentle yarn suitable for delicate baby skin. You will need 1 x 50g ball in your chosen color. The pattern offers multiple color options from the Sirdar Snuggly range:

  • Buba (color 471)
  • Light navy (color 224)
  • Tutu (color 191)
  • White (color 251)
  • Pastel blue (color 321)

The 4 ply yarn weight is ideal for premature and newborn garments, offering a lightweight fabric that provides warmth without bulk. The recommended tension is 36 rows to 4 inches when worked in stocking stitch on 3mm needles.

Equipment Needed

  • 3mm double pointed needles – essential for working the hat in the round
  • Tapestry needle – for weaving in yarn ends and finishing

Pattern Structure

The hat begins with casting on 28 stitches and is worked in rounds to create a seamless, comfortable fit for tiny heads. The construction uses a combination of stocking stitch for the main body and strategic decreases to shape the crown. The mock cable ribbed design provides visual interest and texture while remaining simple enough for an intermediate knitter to execute successfully.
