Product Description

This pattern is unique in structure. I have provided full written instructions for a Super Bulky version, then there is a spreadsheet you can use to get numbers to work the same pattern in any gauge and at any size!

Positano is a perfect quick knit: fun, interesting, not too difficult. I adore this stitch pattern for its simplicity and versatility. The Super Bulky version (small size) takes one skein. It can be made larger if you've got more yarn, but it will do a lot with a little.

Don't have a ball of Super Bulky? Then take the Steps to Positano route to use what you have. The Calculator will give you the numbers you need. I've done videos to take you from thestart to the finish — and explaineverything in between. This is a moebius. It is difficult to find a way to get a measurement that works on a Möbius. Calculating Neck Opening below for how I did it--but it isn't a guarantee it will precisely yield what you will get.

Positano & Steps to Positano Cowl Patterns

What Is Being Made

Positano and Steps to Positano are two coordinated cowl knitting patterns designed by Jill Wolcott. These patterns offer flexibility for knitters working with different yarn weights and quantities. The Positano version is optimized for super bulky yarn, creating a quick-knit cowl that can be completed with as little as one skein in the small size. The Steps to Positano pattern provides an adaptable alternative, allowing knitters to use yarn they already have on hand by calculating custom stitch and row counts based on available yardage.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Both patterns employ intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills. The designs feature a Möbius construction, which creates a continuous loop with a single twist—a sophisticated shaping method that adds visual interest and structural elegance. The patterns incorporate dropped stitches as a deliberate design element, creating texture and visual variation throughout the cowl. The JSSBO (Jill's Super Simple Bind Off) technique provides a clean, professional edge finish.

Stitches Used

The stitch pattern is described as simple yet versatile, making it accessible for intermediate knitters while remaining visually engaging. The pattern emphasizes the stitch work's inherent simplicity, allowing the yarn texture and weight to showcase the design effectively. Dropped stitches are used intentionally within the pattern structure to create dimensional effects.

Yarn and Materials

These patterns accommodate an exceptionally wide range of yarn weights, including lace weight, sport weight, DK, worsted weight, heavy worsted, aran, chunky, and super chunky options. The 3-ply, 4-ply, and 6-ply yarn categories are also supported. This versatility means knitters can use nearly any yarn from their stash. The super bulky version requires minimal yardage—as little as one skein for the small size—making these patterns ideal for stash-busting projects. Knitters without super bulky yarn can use the Steps to Positano calculator to determine appropriate stitch and row counts for their chosen yarn weight and available yardage.

Pattern Support and Resources

The downloadable PDF includes comprehensive instructional materials to guide knitters through the entire process. Written instructions provide detailed step-by-step guidance, while action chartsworksheet is included specifically for calculating custom versions of the Steps to Positano pattern, enabling knitters to adapt the design to their specific yarn and yardage constraints.

Difficulty Level

Rated as moderately easy to intermediate, these patterns are designed for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and shaping but may be exploring more advanced construction methods like Möbius knitting. The straightforward stitch pattern keeps the project approachable while the innovative construction adds depth and sophistication.
