Pops Set eBook by Crystal
Overview
The Pops Set eBook is a downloadable knitting pattern collection designed by Crystal that includes two coordinating projects: the Pops Cowl and the Pops Hat. Both pieces are constructed using classic cable and rib stitch techniques, making them ideal for creating a matching winter accessory set. This intermediate-level knitting project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable stitches and circular needles.
Pops Cowl
What is Being Made: The Pops Cowl is a warm, tubular cowl neck warmer designed to provide comfort during cold weather. It features a simple yet elegant cable and rib design that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters.
Techniques Used: This cowl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques worked in the round on circular needles. The pattern employs cable crossing techniques, including right crosses (RC) and right purl crosses (RPC), which are worked using a cable needle. The combination of cables with ribbed sections creates a textured, stretchy fabric that hugs the neck comfortably.
Stitches Used: The primary stitch pattern is a 2x2 Rib, which alternates knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern. Cable stitches are incorporated throughout the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted rope effect. The ribbing provides elasticity and helps the cowl maintain its shape.
Materials and Yarn Weight: The Pops Cowl is designed for worsted weight yarn and requires approximately 242 yards (221 meters) of yarn. The sample was knit using two different yarns held together: YOTH Yarns Father (100% Rambouillet Wool, 220 yards/201 meters per skein) in the colorway Spring Water, combined with Shibui Knits Silk Cloud (60% Goat Mohair, 40% Silk, 330 yards/302 meters per skein) in Bone. The sample used 242 yards (146 meters) of each yarn. Circular needles in US 7 (4.5 mm) and US 8 (5.0 mm) sizes are required, with lengths of 20 inches to 24 inches (51 cm to 61 cm).
Gauge and Sizing: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, measured in the round after blocking. This gauge is achieved using the larger needles (US 8), ensuring proper fit and drape.
Pops Hat
What is Being Made: The Pops Hat is a matching winter hat designed to coordinate with the Pops Cowl, creating a complete accessory set. The hat uses the same cable and rib design philosophy as the cowl, providing visual cohesion between the two pieces.
Techniques and Construction: Like the cowl, the hat is worked in the round using circular needles, incorporating the same cable and rib stitch techniques. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters will work with cable crosses and maintain consistent ribbing throughout the crown shaping.
Materials: The Pops Hat is also designed for worsted weight yarn and uses the same needle sizes (US 7 and US 8 circular needles) and gauge specifications as the cowl, allowing for a coordinated finished appearance when both projects are completed in matching or complementary yarns.
Pattern Format and Tools
The Pops Set eBook is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it immediately accessible for digital viewing and printing. The pattern includes a comprehensive abbreviations guide and stitch guide to support knitters throughout the project. Essential tools required include circular needles in the specified sizes and a cable needle for executing the cable stitch crossings. Place markers are recommended for tracking pattern repeats and identifying the beginning of round.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and are comfortable working in the round with circular needles. Prior experience with cable stitches is beneficial, though the pattern's stitch guide provides support for executing these techniques correctly.
