Product Description
This is one of a series of squares I designed that gives a bird’s eye view of a New Zealand native tree. The pohutukawa tree flowers at Christmas time (which is summer in New Zealand) and is often known here as the New Zealand Christmas tree due to when it flowers and its lovely red flowers. I have made this in two different sizes – 5” and 10”. This pattern contains all versions with the 10” square first and the two 5” variations at the end (with a comment in the 10” square letting you know when to change to the smaller variations if you wish). Although I have used pohutukawa flower colours in my original design, this design also looks effective in other colours
Pōhutukawa Square by Jenness Fulton
What Is Being Made
The Pōhutukawa Square is a crochet design inspired by New Zealand's native pōhutukawa tree, often called the New Zealand Christmas tree due to its vibrant red flowers that bloom during the Southern Hemisphere summer. This pattern creates a decorative square with a bird's eye view perspective of the tree, available in two finished sizes: 10 inches and 5 inches. The design celebrates the distinctive appearance and cultural significance of this native New Zealand flora through colorwork crochet.
Available Sizes and Variations
This pattern includes multiple size options to suit different project needs:
- 10-inch square – the primary size featured in the pattern
- 5-inch square – two variations of the smaller size included at the end of the pattern, with conversion notes provided within the 10-inch instructions
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Pōhutukawa Square employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes standard crochet stitches to build the square shape with colorwork elements that create the tree design. The construction method allows crafters to work through the 10-inch version first, with clear guidance on how to adjust stitch counts and techniques when transitioning to the smaller 5-inch variations.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn using a 4 mm (size G) crochet hook. The designer used 4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply yarn in three coordinating colors:
- Green (1071) – 12 g (34 m / 37 yds) for the 10-inch square; 7 g (20 m / 22 yds) for the 5-inch square
- Lime (2005) – 11 g (31 m / 34 yds) for the 10-inch square; 3 g (8.5 m / 9 yds) for the 5-inch square
- Claret (1064) – 16 g for the 10-inch square
Additional materials needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly project, the Pōhutukawa Square is designed to be accessible to crocheters new to the craft while introducing basic colorwork and shaping techniques.
