Product Description

Go bananas with a Pocket Monkey! This little monkey is quick to make, and small enough to carry in your pocket. Each monkey only requires small amounts of yarn, so it is a super way to use up any ends of yarn skeins/balls to avoid waste. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the monkey is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round), and the limbs and tail are i-cord tubes worked on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitting bobbles, and seaming to finish.

Pocket Monkey Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry

What is Being Made

The Pocket Monkey is a small knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This adorable stuffed monkey is compact enough to carry in your pocket, making it a perfect portable companion or gift. The finished toy is quick to complete, appealing to crafters who enjoy making small, satisfying projects.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The Pocket Monkey is classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle toy construction with shaping and assembly.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern (including standard knitting abbreviations such as K for knit and foll for following), the pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with shaping to create the monkey's three-dimensional form. Construction involves knitting pieces that are then seamed together using a darning or tapestry needle, a common method for assembling knitted toys.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 100% acrylic DK weight (double knitting, light worsted weight). The sample was photographed using Hayfield Bonus DK in Chocolate and Wheat shades. A minimum of 20cm ply in two contrasting yarn shades is needed, with a few grammes of each color.
  • Needles: A pair of 4mm (US 6) single pointed needles and two 4mm (US 6) double pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round or small sections.
  • Notions and Finishing: A darning or tapestry needle for seaming, a handful of toy filling for stuffing, two 4mm black beads for eyes, small circles of white felt fabric, and a sewing needle with thread for attaching facial features.

Design Details

The Pocket Monkey pattern uses two contrasting yarn colors—typically a brown shade paired with a beige or tan shade—to create the monkey's distinctive coloring. The use of black beads and white felt adds realistic detail to the face, bringing the finished toy to life. This combination of knitted construction with sewn embellishments is typical of toy knitting patterns.

Although this pattern looks great from the front, not really good from back as nose/muzzle goes all the way around and looks really odd, so I'm trying to adapt the pattern.
