Plu Sweater by Jeni Hewlett

What is Being Made

Plu is a softly draped sweater designed by Jeni Hewlett and named after the Welsh word for feather. This knitted jumper is engineered as an effortless layering piece that combines lightweight construction with comfortable drape. The sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, designed to be worn with 23 to 2¼ inches (2½, 2¾, 3, 3.1, 3.3, 3½) of positive ease depending on the wearer's preferred fit within their size range.

Design Versatility

Plu offers multiple colorway options to suit different aesthetic preferences. Knitters can work the sweater in bold colour blocks for a striking statement knit, combine two similar shades held together for a soft marled effect, or keep the design simple by using a single shade throughout. The designer's enthusiasm for this pattern is evident—Jeni Hewlett has already cast on her third version of this sweater.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The sweater is worked using two strands of yarn held together throughout the project. This two-ply construction method creates the characteristic soft drape and lightweight feel that makes Plu ideal for layering. The technique of holding multiple strands together allows knitters to experiment with color combinations while maintaining consistent yarn weight and fabric integrity.

Stitches and Ribbing

The pattern incorporates ribbed edging at the front neck and back neck, which provides structure and prevents stretching at these critical areas. The front neck depth measures 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9) cm including the rib edging, while the back neck width measures 18.5 (20, 21, 22, 23, 23, 24) cm or 7¼ (7¾, 8¼, 8½, 9, 9, 9½) inches including rib edging. These ribbed sections provide both functional and aesthetic finishing touches.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: Two strands of Cumulus held together. Cumulus is a lace-weight yarn, making it ideal for creating the lightweight, draped quality characteristic of this design.
  • Needles: One pair of 4.5mm needles (UK size 7/US size 7) in straight needles for the main knitting
  • Notions: Stitch holder for holding stitches during construction, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a sewing needle with thread matching the yarn shade for seaming and finishing details including pocket construction

Skill Level

Plu is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to newer knitters while remaining interesting for experienced makers. The straightforward construction and fundamental techniques required mean that knitters new to garment construction can successfully complete this sweater.
