Product Description
This scarf features a lace motif that adds a delicate touch to the draping of the scarf.
The finished scarf measures about 30 cm wide and 150 cm long, depending on how aggressively you block your garment and on the fibre you use.
The instructions guide you through the number of repeats necessary to achieve these measurements, but you can decide to make the scarf longer by simply increasing the number of the repeats.
I suggest the use of stitch markers to keep track of the repeats and of the borders.
1 skein of 100g / 350 m 4 ply yarn is enough to obtain a scarf of the size shown in the pattern.
Playing in the Pond Knitted Scarf
What is Being Made
Playing in the Pond is a beginner-friendly knitted scarf design created by Simply Yarn. This finished scarf measures approximately 30 x 150 cm, making it a versatile accessory that can be extended to a longer length if desired by adjusting yarn yardage. The design showcases delicate lace work suitable for knitters new to the craft.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the knitting craft with a focus on lace knitting techniques. The scarf incorporates decorative yarn overs and strategic decreases to create an open, airy fabric pattern. The lace construction provides elegant draping, enhanced by the luxurious fiber content of the recommended yarn. Knitters will work with stitch markers to maintain pattern repeat accuracy across the width of the scarf, and the design includes border sections that frame the central lace pattern.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace-specific techniques:
- k – Knit stitch, the basic forward stitch
- p – Purl stitch, the reverse of the knit stitch
- yo – Yarn over, creating decorative holes and increases in the lace pattern
- k2tog – Knit two stitches together, a right-leaning decrease
- ssk – Slip, slip, knit, a left-leaning decrease that balances k2tog decreases
- sk2p – Slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over, a double decrease
- ktbl – Knit in the back loop, creating twisted stitches for texture
- ptbl – Purl in the back loop, creating twisted stitches
Materials and Tools
The recommended yarn is Fyberspates Faery Wings 4 ply in the Summer Dragonfly colorway, a premium blend of 67% silk, 23% kid mohair, and 10% nylon. Approximately 350 meters (100 grams) of yarn is required for the standard scarf size. The silk and kid mohair content creates exceptional drape and flow in the finished piece.
Alternatively, any 4 ply yarn with wool content can be substituted to achieve the desired draping effect, offering flexibility for yarn selection while maintaining the intended aesthetic.
Essential tools include one pair of 4.00 mm knitting needles and two stitch markers to separate the border sections from the central lace pattern. A sewing needle is needed to weave in the yarn ends upon completion.
Tension and Gauge
The recommended tension is 11 stitches and 16 rows over 5 centimeters when worked in lace on 4.00 mm needles. However, the pattern notes that exact tension is not critical, as long as the finished scarf width matches the knitter's preference. This flexibility makes the design accessible to beginners who may struggle with achieving precise gauge.
