Plaid Pumpkin is the newest in a series of knit pumpkins for your home. Because...pumpkins! This pattern offers 3 colorwork designs as well as instructions for a striped version and a plain verson.
I started dreaming of a plaid pumpkin last year, and this fun design is the result.
The Plaid Pumpkin is a three-dimensional decorative knit pumpkin designed to enhance fall and autumn décor. This stuffed pumpkin ornament measures approximately 8–10 inches in diameter and 4 inches in height, making it a substantial decorative piece suitable for seasonal displays. The pattern was created by designer Carol Herman and is copyright 2019. These pumpkins are constructed to be durable and long-lasting, capable of complementing your fall décor for years to come.
The Plaid Pumpkin is knit in the round, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular fabric that forms the body of the pumpkin. The primary construction method features a Fair Isle colorwork design, which involves working with two contrasting colors of yarn simultaneously to create the plaid pattern. The pattern provides multiple colorwork charts to guide the color changes throughout the project.
For crafters who prefer to avoid stranding (the technique of carrying unused yarn inside the fabric), the pattern includes a striped version that requires no stranding. Additionally, single-color shaping instructions are provided on page 10, allowing knitters to create a monochromatic pumpkin if desired. This flexibility makes the pattern accessible to knitters with varying experience levels and color preferences.
The Plaid Pumpkin pattern requires intermediate-level knitting skills and incorporates several essential stitching techniques:
The Plaid Pumpkin is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn, which is a 4-ply yarn weight. The pattern requires approximately 200 yards (183 meters) each of two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn. The choice of contrasting colors is crucial to the plaid design's visual impact; experimenting with different color combinations allows knitters to create multiple pumpkins with varied appearances.
The finished dimensions and overall appearance will vary depending on the amount of fiberfill stuffing used to fill the pumpkin. Crafters are encouraged to experiment with different yarn weights and color combinations to expand their decorative pumpkin collection and create a personalized pumpkin patch display.
