Product Description
This stunning plaid ear warmer has two great features: -A tubular cast on and bind off to give it that perfect machine knit look. Yay for no ugly cast on/off edges! -You don’t need to weave in a bunch of ends! They are knotted and just hidden under the bow.
This is an intermediate pattern, but I do have links to help beginners learn the tubular cast on and bind off, as well as tips on how to keep your color work tension even.
You will need the following yardage for the XL size and less for all smaller sizes: Fisherman approx 20 yards. Claret approx 15 yards. Black approx 10 yards. Cranberry approx 6 yards.
8mm(US11) & 9mm(US13) for XS/MED, 9mm(US13) & 10mm(US15) for SM/LG/XL
This pattern is for personal use only and may not be copied or redistributed. You may sell items made from this pattern with the pattern credit going back to Knits N Knacks on every listing/item.
Plaid Bow Ear Warmer by Athena Forbes
What Is Being Made
The Plaid Bow Ear Warmer is a knitted headband designed to keep ears warm while adding a stylish plaid pattern detail. This intermediate-level knitting project features a decorative bow accent and is constructed using super chunky yarn for quick completion. The finished piece combines functionality with fashionable design, making it suitable for both personal wear and gift-giving.
Key Design Features
- Tubular Cast On and Bind Off: The pattern employs a tubular cast on and bind off technique to create a polished, machine-knit appearance with no visible or unsightly cast-on and bind-off edges
- Minimal Finishing Work: The design cleverly minimizes the need for extensive end weaving; yarn ends are knotted and hidden discreetly beneath the bow detail
- Plaid Pattern: The ear warmer incorporates a plaid design achieved through the use of multiple yarn colors
- Bow Embellishment: A decorative bow accent serves as both a design element and a functional feature for hiding yarn ends
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for intermediate knitters. The primary stitches employed are knit (K) and purl (P) stitches. The tubular cast on in 1x1 rib creates the seamless, professional edge that distinguishes this project. Ribbed knitting provides elasticity and structure, essential for an ear warmer that needs to maintain its shape and fit comfortably around the head.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn in four colors to create the plaid effect. This super chunky yarn weight allows for rapid project completion while providing the warmth and substance needed for an effective ear warmer. The thick yarn also contributes to the bold, visible plaid pattern. Knitting needles appropriate for super chunky yarn are required to work with this yarn weight.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, this ear warmer is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle techniques such as tubular cast-ons and multi-color knitting. The use of super chunky yarn makes the project manageable and forgiving, while the specialized cast-on and bind-off methods provide an opportunity to develop advanced finishing skills.
