Product Description

Pizol is the mountain where I learned to ski as a child, and today I hike there. It’s 2844 m high, in Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen (Switzerland). To the north, you have a wonderful view of two valleys: the Rhine valley and the Seeztal.

Pizol is a little piece of home and gives a warm, cosy feeling.

The triangular shawl is knitted from bottom up. The border is knitted in a lace pattern with small cables. The middle part of the shawl is knitted with two different yarn weights held together.

I used two solid-coloured yarns.

Pizol Triangular Shawl by Sabrina Schumacher

What is Being Made

Pizol is a triangular shawl designed by Sabrina Schumacher, inspired by the mountain of the same name located in Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The shawl is knitted from bottom up, creating a classic triangular silhouette that offers warmth and a cosy aesthetic. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Pizol shawl incorporates several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add visual interest and texture to the finished piece. The construction method begins at the bottom and works upward, allowing knitters to adjust the final size as desired. The pattern demonstrates the technique of working with multiple yarn weights held together simultaneously, which creates dimensional effects in the shawl's body. Additionally, the border features lace pattern work combined with small cable details, requiring knitters to manage both decorative stitching and structural shaping techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch: The middle section of the shawl is worked in garter stitch, created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch is worked with two yarns held together to build the main body of the triangular shawl.
  • Lace Pattern: The border incorporates lace pattern work, which creates openwork sections through strategic yarn overs and decreases, adding an elegant and delicate quality to the shawl's edges.
  • Cable Stitches: Small cables are integrated into the border design, adding textural contrast and visual complexity to the lace pattern work.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Pizol pattern is designed for sport weight and 4-ply yarn, offering flexibility in yarn selection. Sabrina Schumacher recommends Lana Rara yarn, which is a woolen spun yarn that will fluff up and gain additional texture when washed, enhancing the shawl's final appearance and softness. The pattern notes that if substituting with a worsted spun yarn, knitters should select a thicker yarn weight to achieve the intended drape and finished dimensions. The designer used two solid-coloured yarns in the original design: one yarn for the border and both yarns held together for the garter stitch sections.

Pattern Customization and Sizing

The downloadable PDF includes sizing advice that allows knitters to create a larger or smaller version of the Pizol shawl based on personal preferences and yarn availability. This flexibility makes the pattern accessible to knitters working with different yarn quantities and seeking various finished sizes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Pizol pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The combination of garter stitch, lace work, and cable details provides a balanced challenge that builds confidence while introducing decorative knitting elements.
