Product Description

My family love bonnets and I've always liked pixie style bonnets as they seem really cute for babies and toddlers and when I saw this stitch I just knew exactly how it had to look with a wide garter stitch to stay close to the face.

It's fun to knit and there are two choices of neckband which look the same. The first consists of picking up the stitches as you knit sideways because I hate sewing seams but then I added a simple garter stitch band method which is much easier for those who want to finish quickly.

Pixie Knot Bonnet Pattern by Halmae's Handknits

What is Being Made

The Pixie Knot Bonnet is a unisex knitted headwear design created for infants and toddlers from newborn through two years old. This bonnet pattern was originally designed with a grandson in mind but works beautifully for any baby regardless of gender. The design is versatile in color options, looking equally charming in blues, pinks, greys, or soft white. The bonnet features a distinctive deep garter stitch around the face opening, which enhances the cute appearance of every baby and toddler who wears it.

Garment Specifications and Sizing

The Pixie Knot Bonnet comes in four size options to accommodate different ages:

  • Newborn: 14cm height (folded in half), 13cm depth front to back
  • 3-6 months: 15cm height (folded in half), 14cm depth front to back
  • 6-12 months: 16cm height (folded in half), 15cm depth front to back
  • 1-2 years: 18cm height (folded in half), 16cm depth front to back

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs straightforward knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction starts with one simple rectangle, making the overall approach accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The pattern incorporates an 8-row repeating stitch pattern worked in double knit yarn weight, which keeps the rhythm steady and easy to follow. The designer emphasizes the importance of taking time with the garter stitch neck rib, noting that this detail is both worth the effort and visually effective in finishing the bonnet.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch work features a garter stitch, which is the foundation of this design. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. The pattern uses garter stitch in two key areas: the deep garter stitch around the face opening, which adds both visual interest and practical structure, and the neck rib worked in garter stitch for a secure, comfortable fit. The 8-row pattern repeat in double knit weight creates a fabric with good drape and durability suitable for baby wear.

Materials and Yarn

The Pixie Knot Bonnet pattern is designed for DK weight yarn (also called 8-ply), which is a medium-weight yarn that knits quickly while providing adequate warmth for infant headwear. The designer used Drops Cotton Merino for the grey bonnet sample and Drops Extra Fine Merino for the blue, pink, and toffee colored versions. Both yarns are noted for coming in many different color and shade options, allowing knitters to customize their bonnet to personal preference. The pattern is compatible with any double knit weight yarn, giving crafters flexibility in fiber content and brand selection.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to garment construction. The quick and easy nature of the project, combined with the simple rectangle starting point and straightforward stitch pattern, means that even less experienced knitters can successfully complete a finished bonnet. The designer recommends reading through all instructions before beginning, which is helpful practice for any beginner knitter.
