What Is Being Made
The Phoenix Sweater is a luxurious, seamless top-down knit garment designed to deliver a glamorous and fashionable appearance. This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive laced yoke on the upper portion paired with bracelet-length sleeves. The sweater is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with positive ease starting from 5 cm (1.96 inches) to ensure comfortable fit.
Design and Construction Techniques
The Phoenix Sweater employs a seamless top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. The upper portion features a traditional round yoke that serves as the foundation for the entire sweater. The yoke incorporates integrated increasing, enabling the knitter to expand stitches gradually from the neckline outward without requiring separate shaping rows.
The signature design element is the modified chevron lace pattern that forms the yoke. The designer adapted this traditional chevron motif specifically for seamless in-the-round knitting. The lace repeats are intentionally designed to resemble bird feathers, creating visual interest and reinforcing the Phoenix theme throughout the upper garment.
Stitches and Lace Work
The Phoenix Sweater utilizes lace knitting techniques as its primary stitch pattern element. The chevron-based lace pattern features strategic yarn overs and decreases that create the feather-like appearance characteristic of the design. The lace pattern is worked in the round, requiring knitters to be comfortable with circular knitting methods and reading lace charts. The integration of increases directly into the lace pattern demonstrates intermediate-level technical skill.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This design showcases luxury fibers worked with two yarns held together simultaneously, creating depth and richness in the finished fabric.
Primary yarn: ITO Kinu, composed of 100% organic bourette silk, available in 50-gram skeins with 425 meters (464 yards) per skein. Yardage requirements range from approximately 2 skeins for size XS to 4.5 skeins for sizes 4XL and 5XL.
Secondary yarn: ITO Sensai, a blend of 60% mohair and 40% silk, offered in 25-gram skeins with 240 meters (262 yards) per skein. This yarn requires 3.5 skeins for the smallest size (XS) up to 8 skeins for size 5XL.
The combination of silk and mohair yarns creates the luxurious hand and visual richness described in the design. The use of two yarns held together allows the designer to achieve specific drape, weight, and aesthetic qualities that would be difficult to replicate with a single yarn.
Yarn Weight and Gauge Considerations
The Phoenix Sweater is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight category suitable for creating garments with good structure and drape. The designer emphasizes that swatching is crucial for this project. Although some knitting projects such as scarves or blankets can tolerate gauge variations, fitted garments like the Phoenix Sweater require accurate gauge to ensure proper fit across all nine available sizes. Knitters should create a gauge swatch using both yarns held together before beginning the project to verify their stitch and row gauge matches the pattern specifications.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Phoenix Sweater is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in seamless construction, circular knitting, and lace pattern work. The combination of top-down seamless construction, integrated yoke increases, and lace patterning requires comfort with multiple techniques, making this an appropriate project for knitters ready to expand their skill set beyond basic garment construction.
