Petal Jumper in Rowan Cotton Wool — Erika Knight Design Summary
The Petal Jumper is a knitted sweater design by Erika Knight, published as a downloadable PDF pattern under reference RB001-00002-FRP. Worked in Rowan Cotton Wool DK weight yarn, this intermediate level project produces a relaxed, wearable jumper with elegant structural details including a ribbed border and shaped shoulders. The pattern is written in French.
What Is Being Made
The finished garment is a pullover jumper (sweater) designed to fit a range of bust measurements. Three sizes are provided, corresponding to bust measurements of 81–91 cm, 97–107 cm, and 112–127 cm, with actual knitted bust measurements of 108 cm, 124 cm, and 140 cm respectively. The design features a classic silhouette with a stocking stitch body, ribbed side panels, and carefully shaped upper arm and shoulder sections worked using a short-row wrap-and-turn technique.
Techniques Used
- Flat knitting on circular needles: Despite using circular needles, the jumper is worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round, a practical approach given the large stitch count.
- Short-row shaping with wrap and turn: The upper arm and shoulder areas are shaped using a wrap-and-turn method. Stitches are wrapped by slipping the next stitch, bringing the yarn to the opposite side, and returning the slipped stitch to the left needle. Wrapped stitches are later worked together with their wraps to avoid holes, creating smooth, rounded shaping.
- Rib stitch borders: A 2×2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) is established at the lower edges and maintained as a panel of 9 stitches on each side of the main body rows, framing the central stocking stitch section throughout.
- Stocking stitch body: The central body fabric is worked in standard stocking stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side), creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric.
- Button band construction: Six dark grey, 2.5 cm, two-hole buttons are incorporated into the design, suggesting a button band or placket as a finishing detail.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (jersey endroit) — the primary body fabric
- 2×2 rib (côtes 2 m end, 2 m env) — used for borders and side panel detailing
- Wrap and turn (entourer la m et tourner) — short-row technique for shoulder and upper arm shaping
Materials
- Yarn: Rowan Cotton Wool DK weight, 50g balls. The quantity required is 13, 15, or 17 balls depending on size. The sample shown in the pattern photography is worked in colourway Nutkin 209.
- Needles: Two sizes of circular needle are used:
- One 4 mm (UK size 8 / US size 6) circular needle, up to 60 cm long — referenced as aiguille circulaire n° 5
- One 4.5 mm (UK size 7 / US size 7) circular needle, up to 60 cm long — referenced as aiguille circulaire n° 5½
- One 4.5 mm circular needle, at least 120 cm long, for accommodating the full stitch count
- Buttons: Six dark grey, 2.5 cm diameter, two-hole buttons
Tension / Gauge
The stated tension is 15 stitches and 20 rows to 10 cm measured over stocking stitch using 4.5 mm needles and Rowan Cotton Wool. Achieving the correct tension is particularly important in this pattern given the close-fitting ribbed side panels and the precision required for the short
