Product Description
Mosaic Crochet has typically been a one-sided technique. I wanted to design something that's 2-sided, so this scarf was the result!
You'll need 2 contrasting colors of DK weight yarn for this beauty! You'll also need lots of concentration to eliminate mistakes!
This Overlay Mosaic Crochet scarf is reversible, using 2 new techniques that I've developed called "Continuous Overlay Mosaic Crochet (COM)" and "Reversible COM (REV-COM)". The scarf is worked continuously in narrow rows without ends on each row. The width and length of the scarf are completely adjustable using the instructions in the written pattern. The pattern includes written instructions for each row of the scarf and a mosaic crochet chart. Also included are instructions and step-by-step photos for making the FLdc, AdcWS and AdcRS stitches that are used to make this scarf reversible!
I have a video on my YouTube channel that you can watch to learn this REV-COM technique. My YouTube channel is "The Crochet Architect".
Persimmon Flower Scarf by Susan Lowman
What is Being Made
The Persimmon Flower Scarf is a reversible crocheted scarf designed by Susan Lowman. This intermediate-level project creates a finished accessory that is beautiful on both sides, eliminating the need for additional edging. The scarf is worked in narrow rows across its width, making it easier to follow the pattern without losing your place. You can customize the finished length by repeating the 10-row mosaic pattern as many times as desired.
Techniques Used
This scarf features two innovative crochet techniques developed specifically for this design:
- Continuous Overlay Mosaic Crochet (COM) — A revolutionary technique that eliminates the need to weave in tails or ends at the beginning and end of each row, streamlining the finishing process.
- Reversible Continuous Overlay Mosaic Crochet (REV-COM) — An advanced variation that creates a truly reversible fabric, allowing both sides of the scarf to be equally attractive and wearable.
The reversible quality is achieved through the strategic use of specialized stitches that work equally well on both the right and wrong sides of the fabric.
Stitches Used
The pattern introduces and utilizes the following stitches:
- Anchored Double Crochet on the Wrong Side (AdcWS) — A newly developed stitch that is central to creating the reversible nature of this scarf. This stitch allows the fabric to look polished and intentional from both sides.
- Mosaic crochet stitches — Traditional mosaic crochet techniques are combined with the new continuous overlay method to create the Persimmon Flower pattern.
Materials
The Persimmon Flower Scarf is crocheted using two solid colors of DK weight yarn. DK (double knit) weight yarn is a lightweight, versatile yarn that works well for creating delicate, drape-friendly scarves. The use of two contrasting solid colors allows the mosaic pattern to display clearly on both sides of the finished scarf. You will need a crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn, typically a size H/8 (5mm) or I/9 (5.5mm), depending on your gauge and personal tension preferences.
