Product Description
Beautiful and colourful basket design which was previously published in Simply Crochet magazine.
This fun design uses textured stitches to create a lovely basket to store your essentials in.
The finished basket measures 24 cm wide and 18 cm tall.
It uses DY choice Fruity Dk yarn, you will need 1 ball of each of the 3 different colours. The colour combinations are endless.
I used 3.5 mm hook to give the basket closed texture and make it a bit more sturdy.
Pebbles Basket by Veronika Cromwell
What Is Being Made
The Pebbles Basket is a colorful crocheted storage container designed by Veronika Cromwell. This finished project measures 24 cm wide and 18 cm tall, making it a practical size for organizing small items, crafts, or decorative storage. The basket features a multi-color construction using three coordinating yarn shades that create a vibrant, playful aesthetic.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project is created using crochet, a fiber craft that builds fabric from a single active loop using a crochet hook. The Pebbles Basket is classified as a beginner-level project, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking to build foundational skills. The pattern demonstrates fundamental crochet construction techniques including circular shaping and color work.
Crochet Stitches and Construction
The basket employs several essential crochet stitches to achieve its structure and textured appearance:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch used to begin the project and create the base structure
- Double crochet (dc) – a core stitch used throughout the pattern for building height and fabric density
- Half treble (htr) – a taller stitch that appears in the pattern, particularly referenced in the specialized stitches
- Front post puff stitch (FPpuff) – a decorative textured stitch created by working yarn overs and loops around the post of stitches from previous rows, producing a dimensional, bumpy surface that likely inspires the basket's "Pebbles" name
The pattern construction begins with a circular base (the bottom circle measures 10 cm across after completing round 13) and builds upward in rounds to create the basket walls. From round 32 onward, the pattern specifies working into the stitch at the base of chain-2 spaces. Rounds 40 and 41 are repeated for the pattern repeat, and notably, you can carry yarn between these rounds rather than fastening off, which streamlines the construction process.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Pebbles Basket is worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and stitch definition. The pattern calls for Fruity DK yarn by Dy choice, a 100% acrylic fiber available in 100g balls with 250 meters of yardage per ball. The design uses one ball each of three coordinating colors:
- Yarn A: Blueberry 03 – a deep blue shade
- Yarn B: Bilberry 04 – a purple-toned blue shade
- Yarn C: Lime 05 – a bright green shade
The project is worked with a 3.5mm (US E/4) crochet hook, an appropriately sized hook for DK weight yarn that produces even, well-defined stitches.
Tension and Finishing Notes
An important feature of this pattern is that tension is not critical, making it particularly forgiving for beginners. This means slight variations in how tightly or loosely you work will not significantly impact the finished project. The pattern provides a tension checkpoint: after completing round 13, the bottom circle should measure 10 cm across, allowing you to verify your progress aligns with the intended finished measurements of 24 cm wide by 18 cm tall.
The pattern uses UK crochet terminology, which differs from US crochet terms, so crocheters should ensure they are familiar with UK stitch definitions when following this design.
