Patty Sweater by Katya Frankel

What is Being Made

The Patty sweater is an elegant and straightforward pullover design created by independent designer Katya Frankel. This knitted garment features a classic silhouette with finished chest circumferences ranging from 30 to 51 inches, offering multiple sizing options for various body types. The sweater is designed as an intermediate-level project suitable for knitters with experience in fundamental techniques.

Construction Method

The Patty sweater is constructed using a bottom-up raglan construction, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted from the lower edge upward to the neckline. This method allows for straightforward shaping and fitting adjustments as the garment progresses. The raglan style features decreases positioned at strategic intervals to create a fitted silhouette rather than a loose, relaxed fit.

Techniques Used

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch) – The primary fabric throughout the sweater, created by knitting all stitches on the right side and purling all stitches on the wrong side when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round.
  • Short Rows – Employed to shape the scoop neckline and to lift the back of the neck simultaneously. Short rows are worked using the wrap and turn (W/T) technique, which involves bringing yarn to the front of the work between needles, slipping the next stitch to the right-hand needle, bringing yarn around the stitch to the back, slipping the stitch back to the left-hand needle, and turning the work to begin working back in the opposite direction.
  • Raglan Decreases – Strategic decreases worked at different rates throughout the construction to achieve the fitted raglan shaping.
  • Knitting in the Round – The pattern incorporates circular knitting techniques as part of the intermediate skill requirements.
  • Finishing – Professional finishing techniques are required to complete the garment.

Stitches Used

The Patty sweater primarily utilizes stocking stitch as the main fabric stitch, creating a smooth, classic knit surface. The pattern also incorporates yarn overs (YO) as part of the shaping and design elements. Additional stitches include standard knit and purl stitches worked in various configurations to achieve the raglan shaping and neckline details.

Materials

This pattern is designed for Aran or Worsted weight yarns, which are medium-weight options that allow the sweater to knit up quickly and efficiently. The project requires appropriate knitting needles sized for the chosen yarn weight, as well as circular needles for sections worked in the round. The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions for yarn quantities and needle specifications needed for each size.

Skill Level

Rated as Intermediate, the Patty sweater requires competency in knitting in the round, understanding decrease techniques, and proficiency with finishing methods. The short row shaping technique adds complexity but is clearly explained within the pattern, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills beyond basic sweater construction.
