Product Description
These socks are inspired by the color changes of aged patina, and the intricate beauty of ironwork. I thought this would be a fun sock design that can combine the beauty of hand dyed yarns with the colorwork design, in a simple, yet engaging pattern.
Socks are written for one size, determined by the stitch count of the colorwork charts. You can scale the size up or down by using larger or smaller needles, or slightly thicker or thinner yarn.
Two needles sizes are recommended for knitting these socks: bigger size for the colorwork sections, and smaller size for the rest of the sock.
These socks will be best executed in a two highly contrasting yarns. You can choose a solid, semi-solid, variegated, or speckled yarn for the background (MC), and a high contrasting solid for the colorwork/heel/toe (CC).

What is Being Made
Patina Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for women's socks designed by Olya Mikesh Designs. This project creates a pair of socks sized for Women M (US shoe size 7-8) using colorwork techniques to add visual interest and pattern detail to a classic sock construction.
Knitting Techniques
The Patina Socks pattern employs colorwork knitting as its primary design technique, incorporating multiple yarn colors to create patterned sections throughout the sock. The pattern utilizes two-needle sizing to manage gauge and colorwork tension, recommending the use of two different needle sizes during construction. The socks are worked in the round using the double pointed needle method, which is the traditional approach for sock knitting and allows for seamless construction from cuff to toe.
Stitches and Construction
The foundation of these socks is built on stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for sock wear. The colorwork pattern is integrated into the stockinette base using stranded colorwork charts, allowing knitters to follow visual guides for color placement and pattern repeats. This intermediate-level technique requires managing two yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
- Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) and US size 2 (2.75 mm) double pointed needles
- Yarn: Fingering weight sock yarn in two colors—50g of main color (MC) and 20g of contrast color (CC)
- Additional supplies: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and 2 removable stitch markers for tracking pattern sections
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 8 stitches by 11 rows per 1 inch when working stockinette stitch in the round. Since the colorwork design requires a fixed stitch count, sizing adjustments are made by changing needle size or yarn weight rather than modifying stitch counts. To size up, knitters should use larger needles or consider a sport weight yarn; to size down, smaller needles or lighter fingering weight yarn is recommended.
Skill Level
While labeled as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is accessible to knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and basic colorwork techniques. Success depends on maintaining consistent gauge and managing two yarn colors effectively during the colorwork sections.
