What is Being Made

Party Balloons is a knitting pattern for creating small decorative toy balloons designed by Max Alexander. These finished balloons measure 5cm by 3.5cm (2" by 1.25"), making them ideal for party decorations, toy collections, or as small gifts. The pattern produces three-dimensional balloon shapes that are stuffed with fiber fill to create a soft, sculptural toy.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that uses fundamental knitting techniques worked in the round. The pattern employs double-pointed needles (DPNs) to create seamless, circular knitted fabric. The construction method involves strategic increases and decreases to shape the balloon form, demonstrating essential shaping skills for toy and amigurumi-style knitting.

Stitches Used

The Party Balloons pattern utilizes the following knitting stitches and techniques:

• Knit (K) - The fundamental stitch used throughout the majority of the pattern
• Make 1 (M1) - An increase stitch used to expand the balloon's width during the shaping rounds
• Knit 2 Together (K2tog) - A decrease stitch used to reduce stitches and create the balloon's tapered top

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern is designed to work with Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift, a 2-ply 100% wool yarn in fingering weight. One ball provides 105 meters (115 yards) and weighs 25g (0.88 oz), which is sufficient for multiple balloons. The pattern is flexible and works with any 4-ply sock or fingering weight yarn of similar weight and yardage.

Additional materials required include 2.5mm/US 1.5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) and stuffing or fiber fill to create the three-dimensional balloon shape. The recommended gauge is 8 stitches and 11 rows per 2.5cm (1 inch) square, which helps ensure the balloons are the correct finished size.

Pattern Structure

The pattern is worked in 31 rounds total, beginning with a cast-on of 8 stitches. The construction follows a logical progression: initial rounds establish the base, followed by strategic increases that expand the balloon to its widest point at 32 stitches (round 16). The middle section maintains the width, and the final rounds use decreases to taper and close the balloon shape. After completing the knitted portion, the balloon is stuffed with fiber fill and the remaining stitches are drawn closed to complete the toy.
