Materials For this crochet alpaca you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need two different yarns, Istex Lètt Lopi, colour straw 1418 (1/3 of a 100 yard skein) and Garnstudio Drops alpaca bouclé mix 2020. You also need some yarn to embroider a nose and mouth. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). A pipe cleaner for the tail is optional.

Pacu the Alpaca Crochet Pattern by Son's Popkes

What is Being Made

Pacu is a crocheted alpaca amigurumi toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This finished stuffed animal measures approximately 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in height, making it a small decorative or play toy. The alpaca features a distinctive fuzzy texture created through specialized yarn choices and crochet techniques, resulting in a soft, tactile plush toy with character and charm.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-part construction and specialized techniques. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology, and designers recommend reading through the entire pattern before beginning to understand the construction method and yarn requirements.

Crochet Techniques Used

Pacu is constructed using several key crochet techniques:

  • Working in the round: The alpaca is primarily worked in continuous rounds or spirals, with the option to use a stitch marker to clearly mark the beginning of each new round and track progress
  • Back loop crochet: Specific sections of the alpaca are worked through the back loops only, creating texture variation and structural definition in different parts of the toy
  • Multi-part assembly: The pattern involves creating separate body components that are later joined together to form the complete alpaca figure

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental crochet stitches commonly used in amigurumi projects. The pattern includes alternative stitch counts for crocheters who cannot source the recommended fuzzy yarn, allowing flexibility in yarn substitution while maintaining the overall structure and proportions of the finished toy.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

Yarn Requirements: Pacu is made with a combination of two different yarns to achieve its distinctive appearance. The base yarn (yarn 1) is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool in aran weight that provides structure and body to the toy. The fur yarn (yarn 2) is Drops alpaca bouclé, a loopy and fuzzy yarn that creates the dense, textured coat characteristic of the alpaca. Specific color numbers are provided in the pattern's materials section. For crocheters unable to locate a loopy fuzzy yarn, the pattern includes alternative stitch counts to accommodate standard yarn substitutions.

Yarn Weight: The pattern uses aran and worsted weight yarns, which are medium-weight options that work up relatively quickly and create a sturdy, well-defined finished toy.

Tools: A crochet hook appropriate for the selected yarn weight is required. Additionally, a stitch marker is recommended to track the beginning of each round when working in spirals, helping maintain consistent shaping throughout construction.
