Product Description
Blythe wants in on the owl craze! This delightful raglan sweater is worked top-down on dpns. The body is worked back and forth, flat, and the sleeves are done in the round. There is no seam! The back is open, and I used snaps for closure, but you might want to use velcro or ties. The owl is cabled right into the body of the sweater, and the outlines on embroidered on later. Pattern includes written, line-by-line instructions for the knitting (there are no detailed instructions for the embroidery). A fun and satisfying project!
Owl Sweater for Blythe by Jessie Driscoll
What Is Being Made
This is a custom-fitted raglan sweater designed specifically for Blythe dolls. The garment features a charming owl motif created through embroidery, making it an ideal accessory for doll enthusiasts and miniature fashion collectors. The sweater is sized to fit the proportions of a standard Blythe doll and showcases thoughtful construction details including snap closures for easy dressing and undressing of the doll.
Knitting Techniques
The Blythe Owl Sweater employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create a polished, professional finish. The garment is constructed using a raglan sleeve construction, which features diagonal decreases that create seamless transitions from the body to the sleeves. This technique is worked flat on double-pointed needles rather than in the round, allowing for precise shaping and control over the fit.
The pattern incorporates cable stitches as indicated by the C4F cable stitch notation, adding textural interest and visual depth to the sweater design. Additionally, the pattern uses specialized increase techniques including the K1f&b increase (knit one front and back) and P1f&k increase (purl one front and knit), which are strategic methods for creating shaping and structure without visible holes or gaps in the finished fabric.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch throughout the sweater, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric
- K1f&b increase – a left-leaning increase that knits into the front and back of the same stitch, resulting in a purl stitch on the second leg
- P1f&k increase – a purl-based increase that adds stitches by purling into a stitch and then knitting into the same stitch
- C4F cable stitch – a four-stitch cable crossed to the front, created by slipping stitches to a cable needle and holding them in front while working subsequent stitches
Materials and Notions
The Owl Sweater requires approximately 30 yards of lace to light fingering weight yarn, making it an excellent project for using up small quantities from your stash. The designer recommends two shades of the same-weight yarn for embroidering the owl details, allowing crafters to choose complementary or contrasting colors based on personal preference.
Essential notions include a set of four Size US 0 (2mm) double-pointed needles or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge of 21 stitches over 2 inches when working stockinette stitch flat. Additional supplies needed are four small stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a sewing and embroidery needle for attaching the owl embroidery and finishing details, small scissors, a small amount of contrasting waste yarn for provisional casting on, and three very small snaps for the closure mechanism that allows the sweater to be easily fastened and unfastened on the doll.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches equals 2 inches in stockinette stitch when working flat back and forth on needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the sweater fits the Blythe doll correctly, as even small variations in tension can affect the final dimensions of this miniature garment. The sizing is specifically designed to fit a standard Blythe doll, making this pattern an ideal choice for doll collectors and miniature fashion enthusiasts.
