Owl Hat Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Owl Hat is a charming crocheted hat designed by Stacey Trock, available in both child and adult sizes. This whimsical project creates a wearable hat featuring owl-inspired details, making it an engaging intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with some experience in crochet fundamentals.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern is worked entirely in crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn. Crochet is known for its versatility and ability to create both delicate and structured garments. The Owl Hat demonstrates how crochet can be used to construct three-dimensional, fitted pieces like hats that require shaping and color changes to achieve the desired design.

Stitches Used

The Owl Hat pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:

  • Chain (ch) - The foundational stitch that creates a series of loops, typically used to begin projects and create edges
  • Single Crochet (sc) - A short, tight stitch that creates dense, structured fabric, ideal for hats that need to hold their shape
  • Double Crochet (dc) - A taller stitch that works up more quickly than single crochet while still maintaining good structure
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) - A decrease stitch used to reduce stitches and shape the hat, particularly important for creating the fitted crown

Special Technique: Back Loop Only Stitching

A notable technique featured in this pattern is stitching into the back loop only of stitches. This method, used throughout the pattern unless otherwise directed, creates a distinctive textured ridge on the fabric. By working into only the back loop rather than under both loops of a stitch, the crocheter creates visual definition and a professional finish that enhances the hat's appearance.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Owl Hat requires minimal yardage, making it an economical project. Less than 220 yards total (typically one skein) is needed, divided among multiple colors to create the owl design.

Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is specified, a medium-weight yarn that works at a standard gauge and is readily available in most yarn shops. Worsted weight provides good stitch definition and creates a durable, warm hat suitable for regular wear.

Yarn Composition: The pattern recommends 100% wool worsted weight yarn for optimal results. The sample was created using Ella Rae Classic yarn in the following colors:

  • MC (Main Color) - Brown Heather (Ella Rae Classic #124)
  • SC (Secondary Color) - White (Ella Rae Classic #01)
  • AC1 (Accent Color 1) - Orange (Ella Rae Classic #27)
  • AC2 (Accent Color 2) - Yellow (Ella Rae Classic #44)
  • AC3 (Accent Color 3) - Black (Ella Rae Classic #32)

While Ella Rae Classic was used in the sample, any worsted weight yarn in comparable colors will work successfully for this project.

Tools Required

The Owl Hat pattern calls for minimal equipment:

  • Size H Crochet Hook - A standard hook size that pairs well with worsted weight yarn to create appropriate gauge and fabric density
  • Tapestry Needle - Used for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together if needed
  • Small Amount of Stuffing - Optional fiberfill used to add dimension and structure to the owl features

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Owl Hat is appropriate for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle projects involving color changes, shaping techniques, and the back loop only stitch method. The pattern builds skills in working in the round and managing multiple yarn colors while maintaining consistent tension and stitch quality.
