Outlander Inspired Claire Navy Blue Brown Shawl Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
This is a knitted shawl inspired by the Outlander series, featuring a classic triangular design in navy blue and medium brown colorways. After wet blocking, the finished shawl measures approximately 160 cm (63 inches) wide at the top and 70 cm (27.5 inches) long at the mid back, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering and styling.
Yarn Materials
The pattern calls for Drops Nepal yarn from Garnstudio, a blend of 65% Highlands Peruvian Wool and 35% Alpaca in a 10 ply / aran / worsted weight. The total yardage requirement is 6 skeins, with each skein weighing 1.8 oz (50 g) and containing approximately 82 yards (75 meters). The colorway combination includes:
- 4 skeins of color no 1709 (Navy Blue)
- 2 skeins of color no 0612 (Medium Brown mix)
Needles and Tools
While the recommended needle size for Drops Nepal yarn is US 8 / 5 mm, this pattern specifically uses US 10.5 / 7 mm circular needles or long straight needles to accommodate all stitches comfortably throughout the project. The larger needle size creates a more open, flowing fabric appropriate for a shawl construction.
Stitches and Techniques
The primary stitch used in this shawl is Garter Stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an excellent choice for shawl patterns as it lies flat and provides good drape. The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches by 26 rows over a 4 inch by 4 inch (10 x 10 cm) swatch in Garter Stitch.
Skill Level and Finishing
The pattern is designated as beginner to intermediate difficulty, though the PDF notes intermediate to advanced considerations. The shawl requires wet blocking to achieve its final dimensions and shape, a finishing technique that involves soaking the knitted piece in water and pinning it to specific measurements while drying. This process helps even out stitches and allows the shawl to reach its full width and length potential.
