What is Being Made
The Oft Cable Socks are an advanced-level knitted sock design available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This project creates a pair of fitted socks featuring cable stitch details, designed to fit multiple foot circumferences. The pattern provides directions for three sizes: 7", 8", and 9" foot circumference, making these socks customizable for different wearers.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project that employs advanced knitting techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The construction begins with a provisional cast on method, which allows for seamless finishing and is a hallmark of professional sock construction. The sock is worked from the toe up, a popular method that provides excellent fit control and allows knitters to adjust length before committing to the leg portion.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Oft Cable Socks utilize a variety of essential and advanced knitting stitches:
- Stockinette stitch – the foundational stitch used throughout much of the sock, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Cable stitches – the signature design element that gives these socks their visual interest and texture
- Yarn overs (yo) – used to create decorative holes and shaping
- Backwards yarn overs (bw yo) – a directional yarn over variation that maintains stitch consistency
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) and knit 3 together (k3tog) – decreases that shape the sock
- Slip, slip purl (ssp) and slip, slip, slip purl (sssp) – left-leaning decrease stitches for shaping
- Knit through back loop (kbl) – a twisted knit stitch that adds texture and prevents holes
Materials and Gauge
The Oft Cable Socks are designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, a lighter yarn category that creates a refined, fitted sock. The pattern is worked on 2.5mm needles to achieve the specified gauge of 30 stitches and 48 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. This gauge is essential for achieving proper fit and ensuring the socks meet the intended foot circumference measurements.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern is clearly written with size variations indicated in brackets throughout. All directions are provided for the base 7" foot circumference, with adjustments for 8" and 9" circumferences noted in brackets, allowing knitters to easily customize their socks. The toe section demonstrates the detailed row-by-row instructions that characterize this advanced pattern, with precise stitch counts for each size at every step.
