Product Description
About the Pattern: When I 1st shared images of this texture online, quite a few said it reminded them of “stars and stripes.” I made this for a friend who is also an American, so I thought this somewhat patriotic play on words was fitting. The color of the yarn used for the sample was “Capri” and also reminded me of the sea. The afghan is reversible (basically the same on both sides, just with reversed textures.)
Finished Size: You may make this blanket to any desired dimensions. Sample baby blanket measured approx. 30” square. Materials: You may use yarn and hook of choice with this pattern; sample blanket used… • Fingering weight baby yarn – approx. 1500 yards • Crochet hook size F (3.75mm)
Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate Stitches used include ch, hdc, fphdc, hdsl (for the edging)
Pattern is written in standard American crochet terms.
O Say Can You Sea Afghan
What is Being Made
The O Say Can You Sea Afghan is a crocheted blanket and throw designed by Lisa van Klaveren. This project creates a versatile blanket that can be customized to any desired dimensions, with the sample baby blanket measuring approximately 30 inches square. The design features a distinctive textured pattern that evokes both patriotic "stars and stripes" imagery and oceanic themes, making it suitable as a decorative throw or functional blanket for various spaces and occasions.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs a repeating textured stitch pattern that forms the visual foundation of the design. The primary stitches used include:
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – serves as the base stitch for establishing the blanket's foundation and structure
- Front Post Half Double Crochet (fphdc) – creates the dimensional texture and visual interest by working around the posts of previous stitches, producing the raised, dimensional effects that resemble the pattern's distinctive texture
The pattern is constructed using a multiple-of-3 stitch repeat, which allows for consistent, predictable stitch counts throughout each row. This mathematical structure ensures that the blanket maintains even dimensions and balanced proportions regardless of the final size chosen by the crocheter.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The O Say Can You Sea Afghan offers flexibility in yarn and hook selection, allowing crafters to work with their preferred materials. The sample blanket was created using the following specifications:
- Yarn Weight: Fingering weight baby yarn, with approximately 1500 yards required for the sample size
- Crochet Hook: Size F (3.75mm)
- Yarn Color: "Capri," a shade that evokes both the sea and contributes to the patriotic aesthetic of the finished piece
The pattern notation indicates compatibility with 4-ply, DK (double knit), and worsted weight yarns, providing crafters with multiple yarn weight options to suit their preferences, available materials, and desired blanket drape and texture. The flexibility in yarn and hook choice allows customization of the final blanket's appearance and weight while maintaining the integrity of the stitch pattern.
Skill Level and Project Scope
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and comfortable working with post stitches and texture techniques. The customizable dimensions allow crafters to create anything from a small baby blanket to a larger throw, adapting the project to their skill level, available yarn, and intended use.
