Product Description
A lovely simple lacy shawl, just right for summer evenings, and surprisingly easy and quick to make. The shawl is worked from the long top edge downwards, so you start with a long foundation chain but each row gets shorter. The finished size is 160cm wide by 75cm deep. I used The Natural Dye Studio’s Angel 4 ply yarn in Nutmeg, but any 4ply/fingering weight yarn will do. The pattern includes English and US crochet terms. For a bottom up version of this design see Angel Wisp Shawl, which is made in mohair laceweight.
Nutmeg Lace Shawl by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Nutmeg Lace Shawl is a lightweight, open-work crocheted shawl designed for warm-weather wear. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a finished garment measuring 160cm wide by 75cm deep, making it a generous triangular or rectangular wrap suitable for summer evenings. The shawl is worked from the top edge downwards, with each row becoming progressively shorter as you work toward the point, creating an elegant tapered silhouette.
Construction Technique
The shawl employs a top-down construction method, beginning with a long foundation chain of 206 stitches. Rather than working outward from a center point, this approach starts with the widest edge and narrows with each subsequent row, allowing the crocheter to try on the garment and determine when to stop if desired. The decreasing row structure creates a naturally elegant drape and shape without requiring complex shaping calculations.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The Nutmeg Lace Shawl utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined to create an airy, lacy fabric:
- Chain stitch (ch) – forms the foundation and creates the open lacework spaces throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary structural stitch that anchors the lace pattern
- Treble stitch (tr) – adds height and contributes to the open, delicate appearance
- Double treble stitch (dtr) – used strategically, including at the shawl edges for definition
- Slip stitch (ss) – joins rounds or secures stitches as needed
The pattern repeats a simple motif of chain spaces separated by double crochet stitches, creating a consistent lacy texture. The second row exemplifies this approach: after a turning chain of 5, the crocheter works double crochets into spaced intervals with chain-space gaps between them, producing the characteristic openwork that defines a lace shawl.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
The Nutmeg Lace Shawl is designed for 4-ply or fingering-weight yarn, a fine yarn weight that creates delicate, intricate lacework. The designer used The Natural Dye Studio's Angel 4-ply yarn in the Nutmeg colorway for the original sample, though the pattern is adaptable to any yarn of equivalent weight and yardage. A crochet hook appropriate for 4-ply yarn (typically a size suitable for this weight) is required. The fine yarn weight combined with the lacy stitch pattern produces a fabric that is both breathable and elegant, perfect for layering during cooler summer evenings.
Pattern Format and Difficulty Level
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses only basic crochet stitches, the intermediate classification reflects the need for consistent tension, attention to stitch placement across a wide foundation chain, and comfort with reading and following row-by-row instructions. The pattern includes both English and US crochet terminology, with the US version beginning on page 3, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with either standard.
