Product Description

Noughts is a square motif designed for the 2018 Friends Around the World CAL. It has texture and works well in one or more colours - the samples shown each use 2 colours.

Noughts also works well withCrosses!

It was designed for aran weight yarn but any weight could be used. Using a 5mm hook, the finished size is 30cm/12” square but it is a flexible design where you can add or remove rounds to get the size you want.

A sample was made in DK yarn, a 4mm hook was used for this square and the resultant size was 25cm/10” square.

Noughts Square by Agrarian Artisan

What Is Being Made

The Noughts Square is a modular crochet project that creates a larger decorative square through the assembly of four smaller squares. This design is ideal for crafters seeking a straightforward yet visually interesting project that combines individual components into a unified finished piece. The textured nature of the design allows for creative color work, making it suitable for both monochromatic and multi-color interpretations.

Construction Method

The Noughts Square employs a join-as-you-go technique, eliminating the need for traditional sewing. The four small squares are connected directly during the crochet process by slip stitching into spaces on adjacent squares. Once all four squares are joined together, a border is worked around the perimeter of the assembled piece. The border pattern can be repeated for additional rounds, allowing crafters to customize the final size of their project according to personal preference.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

This intermediate-level pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches presented in both UK and US crochet terminology. The stitches employed include:

  • Slip stitch (ss) – Used for joining squares and securing rounds
  • Chain stitch (ch) – Foundation and spacing element
  • Double crochet (UK) / Single crochet (US) – Primary fabric-building stitch
  • Half treble (UK) / Half double crochet (US) – Textural variation
  • Treble (UK) / Double crochet (US) – Height and texture creation

The pattern includes a chart for the small square component, providing visual reference alongside written instructions to aid in stitch placement and pattern execution.

Materials and Tools

Crafters will require crochet yarn and an appropriately sized crochet hook to complete this project. The pattern accommodates flexible color choices, with the designer's samples demonstrating a two-color approach, though single-color execution is equally viable given the textured stitch composition.
