Northport Pullover Knitting Pattern for Women – Tahki Yarns Osprey
The Northport Pullover is a relaxed, wearable women's pullover sweater knitting pattern designed by Rosemary Drysdale and published by Tahki Yarns. Worked in the brand's Tahki Yarns Osprey yarn, this design combines classic construction with a subtle textural stitch pattern to create a flattering, everyday knit. Rated Easy, it is an excellent project for beginner to confident-beginner knitters who are ready to explore simple shaping and a two-stitch-pattern approach within a traditional seamed sweater construction.
Garment Overview
The Northport Pullover is a seamed, worked-flat pullover featuring a relaxed silhouette with generous positive ease of 4–6 inches. It is offered in five sizes — Small, Medium, Large, XL, and 2XL — with finished bust measurements ranging from 38 inches up to 54½ inches (96.5–138.5 cm). Finished lengths range from 21 to 24 inches (53.5–61 cm) depending on size, making it a comfortable, hip-grazing pullover suitable for a wide range of body types.
Design Details and Aesthetic
The Northport Pullover is designed with a clean, understated aesthetic. The body features a combination of Stockinette stitch and a Drop Stitch Pattern, which adds an open, airy texture to the fabric without requiring advanced lace skills. The Drop Stitch technique involves intentionally dropping or elongating stitches to create a ladder-like or elongated stitch effect — a simple but visually interesting detail that elevates the garment beyond a plain Stockinette pullover. The pattern is finished with a neckband worked on a circular needle, giving the neckline a neat, professional finish.
Construction Method
This pullover is constructed using a seamed, worked-flat method, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are each knitted as separate flat pieces and then sewn together. This traditional approach to sweater construction is ideal for beginners because it allows the knitter to focus on one piece at a time and produces sturdy, well-defined seams. Shoulder shaping is achieved through a series of bind-off rows, creating clean, structured shoulder lines. Remaining shoulder stitches are placed on stitch holders during construction, a common technique in seamed sweater knitting.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The foundational knit-on-right-side, purl-on-wrong-side stitch pattern used throughout much of the body and sleeves, producing a smooth, classic fabric.
- Drop Stitch Pattern: A decorative technique where stitches are intentionally elongated or dropped to create an open, textural effect. This stitch adds visual interest and a slightly drapey quality to the fabric.
- Seamed Construction: All pieces are worked flat and joined using seaming, a foundational skill in traditional sweater knitting.
- Shoulder Shaping via Bind-Offs: Stepped bind-offs at the beginning of rows create the angled shoulder slope, a standard and beginner-friendly shaping method.
- Neckband: Picked up and worked in the round on a circular needle, finishing the neckline with a tidy band.
- Stitch Markers and Stitch Holders: Used throughout to keep track of pattern sections and hold live stitches during construction.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is written specifically for Tahki Yarns Osprey, a DK weight yarn with a fiber composition of 87% cotton and 13% polyamide. Each ball contains 1.75 oz / 50g and approximately 148 yards / 135 meters. The cotton-dominant blend gives the finished fabric a soft, breathable drape that is ideal for a relaxed pullover, while the polyamide content adds durability and stitch definition. The colorway used in the pattern sample is color 56488 Night Sky. Depending on size, the pattern requires 7 to 10 balls
